I've had this 'issue' for a number of years now. I need to have the TV / radio / show on the laptop playing in the background to get to sleep. I've even uploaded episodes of Friends and stand-up shows on my phone so I have something playing next to my pillow.

Is this just me? Is there anyone else who is the same?

Also, because I'm always leaving stuff playing on my laptop to get to sleep, my laptop ends up turning itself off due to the battery completely running out. Is this bad for the laptop?

Yup, fan, aircon.. heater.. something must be droning. Must have a duvet or some sort of cover even in summer as well. Yea and you shouldn't run down your battery too often, maybe set it to turn off at 30% or so.

Sort of the same.

If I'm lying on the sofa watching TV, I can doze off pretty easily. Once I get up and go to bed, I'll just lie there for hours, unable to get to sleep!

Get an iPhone and Ambiance, job sorted, I use that app to go to sleep, normally thunderstorms for some strange reason gets me to sleep in 10 minutes.

I have never been in a situation where I would notice, I kinda sleep anywhere.

Like going to my uni halls takes 4 hours via car and I can sleep through all of it :)

And when at a festival I slept through a guy playing a guitar above my head for several hours. (Wasn't drunk :P)

Usually I can sleep without background noise unless im hungover when I need the telly on set at very low volume.

I did go through a patch of not sleeping unless there was traffic noise so I would get a good two hours of solid deep sleep in the mornings after drifting in and out all night

same, I often leave my PC on for the noise of the fans, or if I turn my PC off and can't sleep I go downstairs and sleep on the sofa and turn the TV on.

Silence can be deafening

I'm the opposite - slightest noise keeps me awake :S

but... I find it really really hard to be productive without something else on in the background even if its just the radio, when I'm programming I often put some random TV show on - somehow that lets me concentrate fully on what I'm doing - it seems to keep a part of my brain occupied that would otherwise be wandering.

Well this is just freaky. I am the exact same!
All the way down to the Friends episodes!

i now turn everything off when i go to bed (apart from aircon atm cos its too hot)
noise doesnt bother me if there is any but i just liek it to be dark :)

Alternatively you can buy an app for your phone which I also use.
