People don't use 'chat rooms' so much any more anyway. IRC was popular because of DCC and file sharing, but then along came P2P and eventually bittorrent, killing off the need for IRC-based filesharing.
Now with messengers, facebook and a gazillion forums around there doesnt tend to be the need for chatrooms.
Chat with your actual mates, and use the internet for what it's there for... teh pr0nz!

It might just be me but I'm not sure what benefit this would give over what we have, the forums aren't quite as instant as a chat program but they're close (and with certain topics move too fast for people to keep up properly anyway) and I rather prefer the few moments that people have to think about their response before posting - it doesn't prevent a lot of spam but if it reduces the stream of consciousness/verbal diarrhea posts even by a small amount then it's worth it.
If there's something obvious I'm missing about a chat room then I'd be interested to hear it.
I've found that a chat function on a forum reduces the amount of posts on the forum itself.
It's not required as the forums provide enough subjects where you can discuss to your hearts content.

I prefer a standard forum, it's less spammy, and can be viewed any time

A chat room would be pointless, especially if you want the same sub-forum topics as individual chats. What would be the benefit?
Getting help/advice could be instant, but then again it doesn't benefit the community since 2 minutes later it will be blasted off the screen by all the predictable memes that will flourish like mould.
While true that the same topics crop up time and again on the forum, but generally they last a day or two at least, and they are searchable for anyone sensible enough to actually search before creating a new post.

Erm.... how do you work that one out? It's the same forum, it's just formatted to fit on a mobile
/edit I just realised you were possibly talking about the chat, to which I agree xD
And as someone else said it negates the need for a forum, I'm a conservative chap and like things how they are so keep yer trap shut ya dirty commie
