Help! - I've lost boost and the car's making a dump valve sound

Hi all,

I was just driving my Leon Cupra R back from work and I heard a funny little actuator 'chatter' type of sound.

Then I realised I got no boost.

Stopped - Checked all the pipes etc...

Drove further - Now it's boosting but also making a dump valve whoosh sound randomly??

Except the car has a standard dump valve.

What do you reckon?

Thanks

Check out seatcupra.net forums for similar problems.
If it's a split seal or pipe then it might be hidden underneath somewhere..

Update:

Took the car to my friend’s garage last night and stuck it on VAGCOM – No errors at all.

Then got underneath the car and when rev-ing the engine we could hear that the funny sound(s) were definitely coming from the Turbo / Actuator area.

We then tried to check if the Actuator or Waste-gate was stuck – So took off the pipe that goes from the actuator to the N75 - and manually pumped air into it with Turbo pressure tester tool.

With vacuum applied to the actuator (its starts to move @ 10psi) and allowed it too fully open (applied 15psi) and rev’ed the engine again - Then we could NOT hear any whining sound coming from the turbo.?

The whining rattle type of sound almost sounds like an electric motor whirring.

The car is running an IHI Turbo btw.

As has been mentioned before, the first thing to check would be the Diverter Valve. The A-C and F/G versions, iirc, have a rubber diaphram that is prone to tearing so take it out and have a look.

It's always a good Idea to replace these with the D version which instead of a diaphram have a solid piston setup and are lots more durable.

It may not be the issue in your case, normally the signs are less performance with and increase in noise from the intake sysem, but it's definately the place to start.

Well it seems my dump/divertor valve has punctured itself royally on the Golf MK5 GTi (05 plate). Had the engine light come on and now loads of air noise but no torque really.

Anyone know whether it is safe to drive the car (off boost as much as possible) in the time it takes Jabba to get in a new one?

It's safe to drive in the way that it's not going to grenade itself or catch fire etc, but then again I wouldn't want to drive it about knowing it's gone. Definately keep it off boost and you should be fine short term.

Make sure you get the D revision replacement that I recommended last month :)

Thanks :) Yeah the D OEM product is the replacement although I am contemplating getting a Forge motorsport one?

This makes for great reading!

The forge one is ok, but it does need greasing periodically as it can get stuck, whereas the standard 'D' valve is fit and forget.

Although to be honest the forge came out before the D valve to address the rubber diaphram issue, which is does, but then the uprated OEM D valve was released and it makes the forge item irrelevent.

It's up to you at the end of the day, both do the job. I fitted the D valve as a precaution to my Ed30 and it was only ~£40 and it's been fine.

Well thats good enough for me if the uprated D works fine on the ED30!! How easy is it to install? Any chance you have a part number for the OEM D valve please. Thanks!

The part number I'm not 100% sure about but I think it's 06H 145 710 D

If the DV is at the front of the engine, as in the ED30, then it's easy. If it's bolted onto the turbo then it's a bit tight to get at but still doable by someone with a half sensable socket set and a set of ramps/axel stands - just 3 bolts to remove/replace.

The part number was right.

Thanks for that! I do believe that the DV on the MK5 Golf GTi (200PS) is located on the turbo under the car. Might pick one up from VW and get it fitted!

Been reading loads of posts on the VW forums of failures lol! Thanks for the part number! :)

Think yourself lucky that your engine does not rely entirely on boost to be able to pull the vehicles weight - I've spent a few hours sat at the roadside in years gone by with a similar issue with trucks.

Never had it happen to a Scania, now I've said that however, I'm sure I've tempted fate. :o

Glad your sorting it. :)

Ive called around my local dealerships and no-one seems to have it in stock and one even mentioned that he might not be able to get it in! This is the latest incarnation of the valve right? I might try an Audi dealership and see how far I get.

Might be worth getting a forge 007 recirc valve if proving hard to find. I'd imagine that they fit and doesn't make silly noises!
