AMD Phenom II X6 V's Intel I7 - What to go for.

The OP states

AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1055T 2.80GHz (Socket AM3) Retail

i7 at this clock speed will be quicker

but barely and costs a lot more then some people started saying "omg hes doing secondary encoding amd is like 200% slower" which its not almost identicle

I'm going for a 1055t because I'm rendering and the cost of going for an i7 with motherboard is too much. Although 6gb of ram would be nice with room to upgrade

Hi

Now I wont bait or rise to bait but I will give my personal experiences and let others decide ...

owning both an i7 920 and an AMD 1090T I can clearly state this fact...

The X6 @ 4GHz encodes at anything from 25% to 40% faster using the same (non Intel biased software) and DVD file than the i7 920@ 3.2GHz (with hyperthreading enabled)

Before anyone says thats an unlevel playing field with the AMD clocked higher ... I wont comment on that as I have no personal experience of an i7 @ 4GHz ... I am just aiming to give some idea of what each achieves under the settings I have them running at. The i7 has the advantage of 6GB over AMD's 4GB so that has to be considered too so IMHO the AMD is doing a great job and runs cooler than an i7 by quite a margin.

The other main factor is the AMD system can be put together cheaper with a lower end motherboard used to achieve high clocks while the Intel x58 boards are still overpriced IMHO

Remember this is my experience and my opinion only so dont get shirty if you dont agree :p

Cozzy

no point arguing tbh.

some people will prefer amd and others prefer intel. it'll always be like this.

if u want a system that cheap in money but still fast then go for amd.

if money is no object and want the fastist system then go for intel.

I don't prefer either. I used to have an AMD K6-2, then my next PC was an athlon 1.1 or something, then a Barton 2600, then a A64 Venice, then a E4300, now a Q6600. :p

I just think there's a different "winner" for me each gen or two for what I want, though it also changes depending what my needs are.

sounds like my cpu history!

Although after the Barton, which was an awesome chip!, i went for an x2 3.8+. Now I'm going to go i7!

i had that barton 3200Xp then the X2 series, lower models then the 4800X2 then the FX60, went to Q6600 After that, class chip, cool and clocked very well.

I must admit from reading the reviews the 6 core AMD chip looks very underwhelming. I was expecting allot more. :(
They are good chips if the programs would uses the extra cores, but unfortunately for gaming wise, most are not written to use the extra cores yet...or may be I should say, CPU usage for games are simply not that high/demanding.
CPU architecture and speed would have more impact on the framerate than CPU with extra cores that are not really needed for games.

To be honest, the most CPU demanding games are probably mmorpgs. Yet, most are only written to run the game in single or dual-thread, and the two extra cores of a Quad is not helping. This has annoyed me quite a long time, as I have played fair amount of mmorpgs in the pass. Imagine if mmorpgs using 6 cores properly...I'd probably build a hex cores build right away and be dancing.

having read a lot of reviews of both chips the I7 does have the edge performance wise but im not sure if it would justify the extra expenditure

  • Primary use is going to be for gaming
  • secondary video encoding/editing

Hey DisrupTor75,

have you got a final price yet for both AMD & Intel systems? . . . you mention a price difference of £196.99 . . . did you rework the Intel spec at all? . . following the guys suggestions to knock down the i7 specs a little? (920 + cheaper mobo etc) . . . once you got a final spec of each then you can look at the data and decide if the price premium is worth spending! :)

I'm not following the slightly ad hominem "discussion" so far, I think what is being suggested is perhaps all the web-review sites have made an error when benchmarking and therefore all the data is invalid? . . . . if someone can summerise the thread so far I'm sure we can get some conclusions drawn for you!

From the results peppered around the inter-web the X6 looks a pretty good choice for the money ££ . . . if the results below are flawed in anyway or if I have missed something obvious could someone "politely" set me straight!
