My sister needed a new gpu so she agreed to giving me £50 for my current 4870 if I was getting rid of it. I then managed to pick up a sapphire 4870x2 as an interim replacement for £150 untill the 6xxx series comes out. Only worked out at £100 really and didn't fancy paying out top dollar for something getting replaced the end of this year.

It was a sort of a spur of the moment thing and ended up just going for it. Thats why I'm here for a reality check and wondering if it was a mistake :p

£100 for a 4870X2 is a bargain :)

Still a mean card, though they don't half get warm!

Well while the 4870X2 was a reasonably good price, I think you were a bit daft.

You're mobo is capable of crossfire, you already had a 4870, you could have picked up a 2nd one for about £60.

Thus giving you X2 performance for only £60, instead of the £100 outlay you've spent on the X2.

True lol It was to help my sis out a bit as well though and I've only ever seen my 4870 1GB go for £80+ on the bay inc postage.

Not only that, but 2 4870's in crossfire clock much higher than a 4870x2 would.

ahh I nearly bought one too!,, but what would be better, My plans at the moment are to get Crossfire 4850s, crossfire 4870s, or a single 4870 X2

But also how in comparison would crossfire 5550s be like?

still I am guessing would be an upgrade from a single 9800GX2?. not sure which to have as crossfire atthe moment, 4850s, 4870s 2nd hand from ebay or 2 5550s

I would forget about crossfiring a pair of low end cards like the 5550. Crossfired 5570's are slower than a single 5750 going by reviews.

running 4890's in xfire here which are the tiniest bit faster, plough through ANYTHING! i have thrown at them at the moment

Metro 2033 on full DX10 settings runs at 50-70fps :D

4870x2 here and intend to keep this for a while longer. Will look forward to getting the most out it when I change the mobo and cpu. Mine runs cool so less noise, just keep 'em clean. ;)

If you are happy with it then it matters not how much you paid for the card you killed 2 birds with one stone.

never had a problem with my 4870x2 either great card, i'll keep it for a few years more as yet until dx11 really takes off, but i'am tempted to add in a 4870 1gb to do tri fire.

Yes, when the cpu / mobo change comes for me, to add another 4870 will be very tempting. Need to be able to clock my cpu higher to get the most out of this video card. Might even make the move to a 30" monitor.

I think I'll give this a quick go soon before I give my sister the 4870 1GB ;)
