I'd been listening to some Sonic 2 music, when it struck me just how awesome all of the three Mega Drive Sonic game's music is.

In an infinitely strong playing field, I've been forced to try and choose four Sonic tracks to post up here, so here goes:

Honourable mentions to:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRuJfhEeCe8 - Metropolis Zone

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FCHk_gSwKo - Sky Chase Zone

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-gocswLwsc - Wing Fortress - I remember how epic this zone used to be, and the dreamy music of the Sky Chase Zone did nothing but make it feel ten times as epic.

And this is probably where the ability for game music to conjure up genuine nostalgia in me ended:

Which retro game soundtrack still contains an epic amount of nostalgic value for you? It would be great if you could post some of the music as well! :)

Also, another game series soundtrack that contains a huge amount of nostalgic value of me is the Castlevania series. I'm still at a loss for how, as I've never played them before...But all the same:

*Note: the intro to the above reminds me of Phantasm if any of you have ever seen any of those garbage movies.

Apparently in Super Castlevania, the themes to the first three games are played leading up to the first boss...What I wouldn't give to experience that properly, as it was intended. :(

Good choices naffa, ahh, I can feel the nostalgia flowing through me. :D

Xenon 2 had an alright soundtrack, think it was on one of the Atari's but I had it on the Master System.

Ok, this is a bit sad, but when I the voice came in here, I actually remembered walking up to Eponia for the first time as if it were in real life.

I can't think of the "best" but there are plenty of greats that come to mind, like OMF, C&C, S&D, Killer instinct, omg I'm going to go listen to the KI soundtrack now.

I know, far, far too many to choose from. I suppose my aim of this thread was really to create a huge smelting pot of aural nostalgia, than actually determining the best soundtrack outright (which, of course, would be impossible).

Starlight Zone...A fine, fine choice. I came across this as I was searching for Sonic tunes:

You may like it. I'm not usually a fan of these kind of remixes, but this one seems to be getting me sexually excited. :p

Yes, Properly compsed video game music is awesome, and blows all this 'just play an mp3 in the background stuff' out the water.

Check Mario games, The music is a PART OF THE GAME, and changes, ad slows, speeds up, softness and hardness depending on what you are doing. It's done so well you might not even notice.

Anyway one of my favourite tunes has to be street of rage on the megadrive. All levels, it's like listening to an album as you play through the game.

I hope to god you mean you got the Album with the game too lol. The entire soundtrack was awesome.

Wait! I forgot RPG music counted. Here are some of my favourites from that genre:
FFVI Opera Scene (if you like this, give Darkness and Starlight by the Black Mages a try, it's ****ing magnificent if you can get past the Japanese guy narrating. :p)

Four Fiends of the Elements:

Also because I would be a hell of a sad pander if Chrono Trigger didn't get a look in:

And I think whilst I'm doing RPGs, possibly (in my opinion of course) the most pants-wetting boss theme of all time:

Fairlight on the Speccy - pretty sure IIRC it's not multichannel - it's fast machine code switching, similar to human beatboxes... at the time this was absolutly mindblowing.

Why has no one posted THIS yet?? Another SEGA classic masterpiece
