Why are More Than/Police so ******* useless!

Hmmm, this is interesting as legally I wonder where you stand. It was you who gave MoreThan the wrong details and not the police.

Obviously at the end of the day this is the fault of the police and not either of the insurance companies but presumably MoreThan would have paid for the cost of recovery etc etc even if you HAD given them the correct details, whereas currently they've avoided doing so as NIG paid, so really they should pay?

Audit trail, in situations like this it's vital. If you ensure you have an audit trail of all of your communications, time lined ideally it will help greatly.

You need to speak to a lawyer sharpish I'd say. From what I can tell you may actually have to pay them as you submitted (in good faith) a claim which was incorrect and they spent money pursuing it. While you (reasonably) trusted the details given to you by the police I don't think that's a defense legally.

Your best defense would be the lack of a formal signed contract of any kind between you and NIG (*if* you didn't sign any claims documents).

It really sucks if that is the case though and you'd be a victim of truly horrendous bad luck. Seriously, speak to a friendly lawyer if you know one, or a solicitor if not.

Trust me, I wouldn't even rely on the police around here. Last year, my wife got pull over by the police 5am in the morning for dark tinted window and they tried to accused my wife for being a drug dealer. She was only coming home from a poker night at her brother's house.

Guess what the police is driving around here, a Mitsubishi EVO X.

You get my  of the day.

More Than should surely be handling it as that's why I paid them for legal cover but obviously that means FA to them as they haven't dealt with this claim from NIG at all.

Read your policy. Legal cover only covers you if a claim is made against you. It has nothing to do with you trying to make a claim with another insurance company. It's for protection against people sueing you for loss of life, injury, damage to property etc.

Your situation does royally suck balls though mate. As suggested I'd get on to a solicitor because I'm sure either NIG or the police have to accept some responsibility here.

So they pulled her over and said:
"We think you're a drug dealer"
And then proceeded to do the search of her vehicle all the time calling her a drug dealer?

I do really find that hard to believe.
I can quite believe she was pulled over - if I were a cop and saw a vehicle with potentially "too dark" tints at 5am I think I'd pull it too.
But as for acusing her of being a drug dealer.....

That's the final straw - I'm selling the car.

How am I supposed to run a successful underground narcotics business if my clients think i'm associated with the law?

I think the E36 M3 is a safe bet.

That really does suck, having read through this the only real blame can be down to the police here, I agree that More Than should have probably been more communicative between you and the other insurance company but from their perspective I don't think they legally have to pay anything. As suggested get in touch with a solicitor it also might be worth trying to get a hard copy of the police report, as this may contain the original registration error, though I think that you do have to pay for this.

I called the solicitor that was going to start legal proceedings and also sent them a copy of the letter I sent to More Than and they have said they won't be pursuing me and will deal with More Than instead, hopefully it all finally gets sorted.

Have I missed the bit where the responsibility for paying any costs incurred as a result of this claim fall to Equity Insurance, your insurer doesn't have anything to do with it  Why aren't NIG chasing them?

I guess my insurer need to pass on some details but NIG are having a lot of trouble getting any information out of them, at the end of the day it really is not my problem, More Than should give NIG the info, Equity should pay NIG and then if they want they can chase the police and get compensated for their mistake but at the end of the day the person who smashed into my Discovery should have produced his documents within 7 days and reported the accident to his insurer and not leave it a month to produce.

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got another letter today demanding money and threatening me with legal action!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't be bothered to read your thread so I'm just going by the title, just thought I'd say that every single experience I have had with the police has been very positive. I think they do a fantastic job.
