Windows 7 Student/teacher.

They normally offer a discounted upgrade version of Ultimate for students. You might have to wait until September or something though for it to appear.

I know students, teachers and parents/guardians are eligible for the discounted upgrade, but does anyone know if support staff such as technicians are eligible too?

I remember reading something along the lines of "faculty and staff who are employed by an accredited accelerated learning institution for 8 hours a week, or teach for 4 hours a week are eligible for a discounted upgrade". I'll try and find where I read that.

Can anyone suggest the cheapest way of getting an authentic copy of either Windows XP or Vista? I'm probably eligible for the discount but my copy of XP was pre-installed on my previous PC and I want to use Win7 on my new self build.

It's actually on the Microsoft website but it's in the "Learn more" section for Office Professional Academic 2010. As far as I can tell, Microsoft don't sell Windows 7 to students through their own website. Instead, they have a number of partner websites that sell it. One of which (http://students.pugh.co.uk/index.php?nID=93) has the following in the section about discount eligibility for Microsoft products.

"Faculty and Staff
Full and Part time faculty, teachers and staff of an educational institution as defined below who are on the institutions payroll:

i) An academic or vocational Institution accredited by the UK’s governmental regulatory agency; or

ii) A not-for-profit full-time teaching institution/organisation which is non-academic and/or non-government recognised."

They're selling Windows 7 Professional UPGRADE for £33.37. They don't appear to sell Home Premium.
