ATI 6000 series news!!

Ahhh i wish they would come up with a specific date of release... I'm so torn right now with either waiting for the new SI cards or to get a 5870 card in a few weeks time. What to do what to do??

I hope no-one moves from their current 5000 series for these, it would be a stupid thing to do.

Im in the market for a new GPU. but have been wating since September 2009 for a new GPU, so if they are only 3-4 months away Im gona try to stave off the temptation to get a 5870!

The link says it will be ANNOUNCED Q4, and HIS hope to release Q1. How's that Q3-Q4 Drunkenmaster? Or is the Q4 you're referring to, the financial year?

"early next year" is a long time to wait if u were thinking about getting a card in a couple of weeks! Get the 5850/5870 now wont be disappointed ;)

In the 2nd link there stating ATI still want SI out sometime in the Autumn but the press are speculating that the lack of any closed door demos means it will be delayed until at least the end of the year possibly early next year.

It means, as ALWAYS that reference cards will be available Q4 as per usual, and it will be Q1(maybe even late Q1) before we start seeing custom cooled, custom pcb, overclocked varients from the various AIB's, the same way its happened for the past decade or so.

As for closed door demonstration, its simply refering to, balls, I forgot what just went passed, CES, one of the comp shows, its supposedly taped out but you need a bit before getting them out to getting them on boards. You could quite literally be 2 days too late to make it to CES and 2 days later to release in say October also, in the past when they've talked/shown it at comp shows with a view to having it ready for retail launch 3 months later, it really is a case quite literally of having the card ready to go in the day or two before a computer trade show.

As before this is all VERY old news, and nothings changed in the past 3-6 months on what we've roughly known on the ideas of what they'll be doing. Fact is still on 40nm, efficiency only gets you so far, a 5870 + efficiency might get you a 5%, 10% bump in performance at the very very best. Its likely they'll make something a little bigger, but look at how the 460gtx(marginally smaller die than a 5870) and the 480GTX have been taken on board, how much they cost and power/yield/production issues. While theres a massive gap between the 5870/480gtx in die size, they very clearly won't go that much bigger. You'd be lucky to see AMD use maybe 20% more transistors. You're really looking at something maybe outside shot of 35-40% faster, and will likely reduce yields and increase cost.

Whatever salvaged parts are produced though might be great, IE the new 5850, bigger die, more expensive but only marginally cut down and hopefully significantly cheaper.

I guess reading it again the wording does suggest late Q4 release, and early Q1 for non-reference.

Can't see that it's going to be enough of an improvement over the current 5xxx series to warrant anyone holding off getting a 5xxx series or GTX4xx card.

I think people are waiting for the 6 series because while it may not be that much faster in todays games than a 5870 it may well offer up better tesselation performance where the 5870 seems to have a weak spot.

Isnt there supposed to be an update comming as well for 5 series that allows tessletion to run on shaders like nvidia is doing ?

Hopefully a good reason to hold onto 5 series cards, and should be even better on 6 series.
