The Official "Unofficial" OcUK Forum, Annual LAN Party

Definitely sounds like a good venue and location to me, still a couple of hours drive mind but not too bad at all. Just found the cool box for snacks and drinks... bit too earlier perhaps. :D

Quality vid btw, finally got around to watching it. Over how long was that shot?

That was from 8am Saturday to about 6pm on Sunday.

The image below is the table plan we used for the last LAN, scale is not accurate as you can imagine

As for the booze question, i dont think drinking near all the computers is wise, we dont allow it, we go to the campus bar, cheap drinks and good atmosphere, or you can go to one of the 30 bars and pubs in town, about 10 mins walk.

I wont fill in the form yet, it all depends on date and location.

Loughborough seems miles away for the people in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset area though...

Please sign up if you are interested. How can we plan a venue if we don't know where people live.

No venue has been chosen yet, we are simply discussing what may/may not be aproppiate.

Tempted were it to be at loughborough, it's 5 minutes in the car from where im currently living.

Just about all of the reasons that turn me away from ever attending a lan can be avoided by jumping in the car and fleeing home when i feel like it:)

No booze in the LAN room?

My brother has about 6 of those type of thing :o (just the internal bag not the back pack+ strap casing, normally just tick em in a regular pack and out through the top)

Hmmmm might bring some down if somnolence else brings beer :p

i dont think drinking near all the computers is wise,

But overclockers and gaming goes hand in hand with drunks :(

I mis the ocuk AA l4d games :(

Are you looking at possibly securing some sponsorship for this event?

I know is an un-official OcUK forums event so will probably be steering clear of OcUK competitors sponsoring it, but I know a few people that have organised a number of gaming LANs before and have secured (albeit small) sponsorship from certain companies that supply peripherals and memory. In exchange for some banners (internet banners and physical ones at the event) they normally provide either some financial support or prizes for game winners/competitions/lotterys.
I can get in contact with him and follow up on some of his leads if you would like me to?

Oh, look at that

We have a projector which we hook up games consoles to, we also have a screen for it. In terms of the table lay out, we can have groups of tables, but we found you talk to more people in rows. If you want to put up posters, yes you can. If you watch the video i posted, you can see us in a seating area watching the F1 on the projector. You can also see in the foreground in the video that there is a tea and coffee area, we have an hot water urn for use as well. So there is a lot areas to sit and talk and relax.

Would take me about 2 and a half hours so not too bad for me, need to travel via the M25 then the M1. Can give a lift to someone who lives on route/nearby but I am warning you, you will have to put up with my music tastes. ;)

I'd be interested in this (I've filled out the form); I'd also have space for 2 more in my car travelling from Newcastle upon Tyne :)

I'm a network engineer, would be interested in helping

+1

I might be able to bring some 24/48 port gigabit switches and a semi-decent server too.

Nice. What speed Internet connection does that pipe out to? Redundant Gb links?

Liking the VLAN and device names, I miss being able to give server/network kit witty names. :)

What you're essentially doing is trying to build a lan by committee, this will never work. You need a leader, who get's a core team on board who are dedicated to getting this working, then, when you've designed how it will work and when, and worked out the COSTS of everything and what you would need to charge to at least break even if you're not doing it for profit, you can market it and get people to come.

No other way will work, best case this thread will die and nothing will come of it. Worst case you'll flog it into the ground in desperation to get it working, lose lots of money, and give LAN parties an undeservedly bad reputation. I've seen this FAR too often with new LANs.

At the minute this reads like 10,000 threads I've seen on dozens of LAN party forums that never go anywhere or leave people upset and financially down. This isn't just amateurs, I've seen companies right up to Intel themselves make the mistakes in here.

I was chair of the Loughborough University Computer society last year, however we all work together to put the LAN on. We all have our jobs and we don't need to be told what to do, we meet, discuss the issues and what needs doing from all aspects and then go and do it. We all work well independently and produce great LANs because of it. I resent you saying committees are bad as if you had been to one of our LANs you would see that we do a bloody good job and everyone has a good time.

I know all financial costing, have all the equipment needed, the venue, the staff, the drive and the ability to help make this a possibility. Have you ever put on an 80 person LAN???

Considering you have lots of experience of failed LANs, maybe tell us why they never worked out, rather than criticising us and implying we are going to fail.

loughborough sounds good, (my gf is in leic) and im in stafford so not too far. would need someone to drive though! :P (however my pc is only tiny!)
