The Official "Unofficial" OcUK Forum, Annual LAN Party

A 1 day LAN seems a bit pointless imo, especially if people are travelling a distance to get there. I would say 6pm Fri - 6pm Sun would work well. Just a thought ;)

I agree that it should be over 2 or 3 days, if we went for Loughborough, its a 3-4 hour drive/train from me, so it would have to be worth it.

You want to finish at 3pm sunday :) ive run various lans and attended countless, finishing at 6pm is a nightmare for those packing down and cleaning up!

But 6pm is a great finishing time for those attending the LAN, who want to game for as long as possible.

Let's face it, those organising the LAN aren't there to have the great time we have. (Seriously, I'm mystified as to why this is even an issue).

And it would need to be a multi-day LAN to make the travel worthwhile to many of us.

N.B. I'm not saying the above to be sarky, just putting the consumer first, which is what you need to do if the LAN is to work.

Im fairly sure the folks organising this will also want to get plenty of game time in, this is a community thing after all.

So you've been playing as much as you want from Friday 6pm, you're insisting that people should be able to play until 6pm sunday even though the organisers will need ~5-6 hours to pack everything up and clean it all. If i was organising i'd end it at 3pm to allow those organising to get home before midnight.

Yes, this is for a <100 player lan. iseries takes a couple of days to clear out.

Yeah.. the organisers won't be there to have as relaxed a time of it as the attendees but keep in mind that this isn't likely to be a profit-making venture. The organisers aren't getting paid..they're probably only just about being reimbursed for their costs.

I don't believe I insisted on anything.;)

I was just putting forward my argument for a 6pm finish, as others were doing for a 3pm finish.

As to this LAN making money (@FrenchTart), why not? They are going to need a team to run and maintain everything, as well as act as 24-hour security. They wouldn't get that done for free. On top of that, this community could quite easily produce a nice little earner for someone who could take advantage of that on a regular basis, and I have no problems with that at all.:)

From previous lan party running experience I can tell you that this lan won't make money unless the ticket prices are 60-70 each and we somehow secure some amazing sponsorship.

The costs for venue, equipment, prizes and labour are just too high to make any kind of profit sadly.

edit: If this wasn't the case I'd have continued with the 400 person north-UK lan I was planning a couple of years ago :)

This event is about the community coming together and having a fun time, not a small group of people trying to make a quick buck.

Sure, it just so happens to require an enormous amount of planning and hard work, but that is half the fun, right? Ask the other staff, it is just hilarious ;)

If there is to be any money left over come the end, which I doubt as ticket prices will be costed as accurately as can be, it will either be spent on extra prizes or put in a kitty for the next event :)

I'm sure the set-up costs are prohibitively high for a single LAN, unless you are doing several to spread the costs across (unless you can get a lend of the equipment for free). That's why I'm hoping this will be the first of many.

I did say LITTLE earner. :)

But the people organising the lan are ocukers not a company that does lans.

of course they're there to have a good time it's not their job.

Would be up for this as long as a list of attendees is posted in advance =P

Can possibly give lifts from Bath/Bristol, although might drag a couple of mates along =P
