.."you alright?" (making it sound like "yourrite") or even "Alright?" instead of "Hello" or "Good Afternoon" or even just "Hi". I was in Sainsbury's today and this girl said " You alright?" with no smile on her face. Common as muck :p. It's a petty point I know, but why don't these places train their staff to speak a little more professionally instead of these girls sounding like they think you're their mate from down the road. Is it really that difficult to say "Hello" or do these chavy girls get embarrassed to speak proper english :p

They do, but it's fairly easy for them to just disregard it.

What's wrong with that? It depends on the customer or clientele. Young customer = You alright? How you doing? Hows things? Middle age/Older gentleman = Hi there! Good evening! and so forth.

I do often wonder how people such as that are favoured for any kind of job over someone with even a shred of courtesy or education.

Admit it though, you only went to her because she looked like she was good in the sack. You're just as bad as she is.

Education is pretty irrelevant for a check out monkey. It is however a shame to call her common as muck, simply because she's asking if you're alright, a commonly used conversation starter, in my opinion.

We sound like bloody robots at work.

Hi, did you find everything you wanted today?
Do you need a bag?
Do you want some catalogs?
Do you want future catalogs delivered to you?

A conversation starter between friends, perhaps. Do you address strangers in that manner?

Imagine being in their shoes and having to put on a smile and saying hello for 8 hours. Why does it matter anyway? I could care less what they say, just buy your stuff and go.

I thought this had potential to be another supermarket fling thread from the title, sadly i was mistaken. :(
