Supermarket girls that say ..

.."you alright?" (making it sound like "yourrite") or even "Alright?" instead of "Hello" or "Good Afternoon" or even just "Hi". I was in Sainsbury's today and this girl said " You alright?" with no smile on her face. Common as muck :p. It's a petty point I know, but why don't these places train their staff to speak a little more professionally instead of these girls sounding like they think you're their mate from down the road. Is it really that difficult to say "Hello" or do these chavy girls get embarrassed to speak proper english :p

Still regional variations sound better than 'Derp DERP Derp derp derp!'
It isn't a great thing, and I agree politeness can be in short supply, but at leats they are greeting you in a pleasant manner.

I use a variety of greetings when customers come in to the garage where i work including good morning/afternoon/evening sometimes all in the same sentence, i still haven't got used to doing both evening/night shifts.

The majority of the time im greeted by the customers as they come in where they will simply ask Alright?

I don't see how this thread has gotten to 4 pages, i mean these people are paid either minimum wage or slightly above, probably hate their job and have to put on a false smile, because for every nice customer you get about three complete spoons that think you are the scum of the earth, and this comes through in a customers mannerisms.

Anyway i kinda forgot where i was going with this and just say why don't you try working in a supermarket and see how you feel.

Around here, it's common in many shops for till staff to smear spit on your shopping by licking their fingers just before handling your shopping. This city really is a pit of lowlives.

Do they lick their fingers to get some moisture on them to separate bags and things? If so that's a bit of an overreaction. Use the self service checkout if you don't want another set of hands touching your stuff.

What do you expect shopping in a supermarket?

Go and support your small retailers and local stores and you will find people involved in their businesses and who value their customers.

I don't see what the fuss is about.... "OMG, I can't believe she just said 'you alright?' to me, I feel so offended.".

I've worked in checkouts long enough, I must admit, I always greet people with more intellectual words such as "Hello there" or "Hello there, how are you?" or similar... I don't really care if they respond to it or not, I just want to get the job done and customers to be happy and leave...

You have no idea how difficult it is sometimes to keep my smiling clown face on for 8 hours serving some of the most horrible customers... Although, I was lucky enough that most of my customers were pretty darn good to me, especially teh ladies ;) lol

Hardest time i had to keep a smile was when a customer started shouting and swearing at me then eventually threw a tray at me...

Still told him to have a nice day.

Jesus, sign me up as a member of Mensa if "Hello there" constitutes as 'intellectual words'.

Should have redirected the customer to the manager :D
That's what I do.. after all, that's the manager's main role in the retail industry, to get shouted at by really angry customers and deal with it :D

It is fraustrating sometimes when there is a complex customer complaint but being in my position/role, I can't do anything... there's only so much I can do.. I am bound by company policies, so all the shouting angry customers get redirected to the manager :p
lol
