Should a bicycle be on the roads

It is. I regularly see Police cars drive past on my cycle home from work, they dont care. There is genuinely better things for them to do.

Its' not like pavements are ever busy - In city centres, I can see a point for keeping bikes to roads. Out in the sticks theres no reason not to use footpaths.

Exactly this. It's a pointless law because Police won't enforce it - it just adds extra needless paperwork.

If all the cyclists got onto the pavement, there would be uproar - and lots of injured and upset pedestrians. Many road cyclists go along at 25mph - there's no chance you could do that safely on the pavement.

Bicycles have been around long before cars - neither of us own the road. Car tax does not pay for roads, the funding doesn't work like that - and even if bicycles were liable for car tax - it's based on emissions, so it'd be £0 anyway (unless the rider REALLY likes his or her curries).

Cars should not be on the road imo, with the general level of driver competency they should all be banned.

Well that's retarded, as most people cycle on roads (they don't want to break the law)... so you can't compare the two like that.
imo most cyclists ride on roads and pavements rather than one or the other exclusively. Many, many, many cyclists ride on pavements where available.

Some cyclists are okay - but a prime example of some happened yesterday - we were driving down a busy road - noticed the cyclist - began to move out and she started moving out with us! - She then moved back in, but seriously if you can't even keep balance properly you shouldn't be allowed on the road.

This has happened multiple times now!

Usually to jump Red lights & avoid Traffic. :D

Probably because it's never swept and full of glass and gravel - both of which could cause a nasty wipeout at speed.

And in some cases round here, most pedestrians completely ignore the signs for cycle paths and walk down the middle of them. It makes it far more dangerous to use the cycle path than the road - especially when many pedestrians do not make any effort to move out of the way when they see a bicycle coming straight for them on a cycle lane.

Cyclists around these parts don't ride on pavements. It sounds as if you live somewhere in the depths of the countryside or somewhere underdeveloped.

I live in Middlesbrough, which is a well developed town.

I think one of the issues in people seeming to ride on the roads too much is that a lot of you are obviously car drivers, whereas I do not drive so I walk a lot more than your average driver hence seeing a lot more cyclists on pavements.

Basically i dont think bicycles should be on roads. I think pavements should be expanded to encompass cyclists.

I'm pretty sure the stats back that up. I cant think of a pedestrian who has been killed or seriously injured by a cyclist. However the same is not true for cyclists who have been injured or killed in vehicle accidents.

While I'll agree that more deaths & injuries have happened to Cyclists on the Roads, you are very wrong to assume that no Pedestrian has been injured or killed by a Cyclist on the Pavement.

A few examples for you:

There was also one very high profile case not so long ago which I can't actually find a news story for right now.

Well, what a thread, every one has an opinion on what's right or really what has become acceptable.
I think us Brit’s need more encouragement to use cycles instead of relying on a car for short journeys, and employers / councils need to provide facilities for cyclist’s.
Also there is a lack of education that using a cycle is not the poor mans choice of transport.
Perhaps police should be more harsh on cyclists to abide by the road traffic laws.
As I do stop at red lights while lots of cyclists just behind me sail straight through the red lights, I think WTF, that is a dangerous move !

Lets not argue should they or should they not be on the road, it comes down to the fact that local councils have fragmented cycle lanes that start for half mile, then nothing, then another one starts. We clearly do not have the room in this crowed country for dedicated lanes with out ripping up the suburban transport infrastructure !
