Should a bicycle be on the roads

It would seem that car drivers are all perfect drivers, gentlemen of the roads with monocles and smoking jackets. :p
Well quite. The age old debate shouldn't be "should cyclists be allowed on the road", it should be "why isn't more done to get irresponsible and dangerous drivers off the roads?"

They've got a lot of paving to do then have they, a separate lane on every road in the UK that a cyclist can legally cycle on would take decades.....
It's not about putting a separate lane on every road... it's about separating the existing lanes.

It doesn't? So adding a physically separate cycling lane to all our towns and cities roads, the vast majority of which are single lane and have nowhere to push the pavements back too doesn't need extra room? Where does this magical separate cycle lane fit in?
The video is fairly clear, no? It's a rearrangement of the existing space.

It's very simple. All forms of unnatural transport, cars, motor bikes, bicycles and horses stick to the road or roads with lanes. All us merry folk who walk or have prams and wheelchairs will continue to stick to pavements.

Now on yer bike and you know where you can go. :p

/argument & /thread :D

Are horses or pedestrians not so capable? Remember insurance isn't to cover the possibility of injuring people, but the covering of possible liability. Pedestrians are more likely to cause an accident in my opinion, given the majority of their headless wandering.

Quite. But most horses and pedestrians travel at a far reduced speed, minimising the risk. If horses were to start using the road like a racecourse then things would be different.

Bicycles travel at speeds capable of causing people serious injuries.

As i have mentioned before, there is not enough room for us all !

I think we all know who to blame for that!

Yes thats a lovely idea. Shame we simply don't have the room.

we do in many places. where possible, it should happen.

Government is doing fitness, green and other drives. All of which cycles qualify for. yet there has been hardly any push towards proper integrated cycle lanes. Just random stretches that suddenly end for no reason.

The amount of new build places as well as redevelopment and the basics are not being put in, be it cycle lanes to fibre optic cables to bus stops that are off the main road, so don't block traffic. Totally shoddy design and lack of foresight.

Ok. Are you going to foot the few hundred million?

No, the only practical solution is better education of road users, such as during the driving test, and as has already been mentioned cycling lessons.

Giving the police a mandate to protect road users by removing dangerous ones would be a worthwhile step too.

When redeveloping or new builds you can put sections in at very little extra costs. The country is spending billions on road infrastructure, why not do it right. Far more useful than spending it on other areas.

It's not just safety aspect, it is congestion as well. roads/junctions need to be redesigned properly. rather than just throwing millions on a bus lane and then not updating other aspects and laws.

It works both ways, people braking road laws should be prosecuted, cyclists, bikers and drivers.

I dont cycle a lot any more but the amount of times "I" have had to avoid a car is scary, I once touched the side of a van when it pulled out on me when I was doing about 20 mph, driver just carried on and didnt see me.

Do you watch cars like a hawk too? They can do an awful lot more than scratch your paintwork.

Of course I do, but last time i checked they don't try and squeeze between stationary traffic which was my point. For example I had some biddy drop her ruck sack whilst doing this which scratched my wheel arch. What could I do other than be the stereotypical driver and shout a profanity at her. Luckily it polished out...

So Mr Splodge what is your view on a cyclist causing an accident. Lets be controversal and say the cyclist skips a red light and hits a car. Who is going to pay for damages to the car? I'm sure the cyclist would try and claim for injuries against the drivers insurance?

As I mentioned in my original post I have no problem with cyclists using the road. I just think it should be a legal requirement for them to have insurance. cyclists just seem to be ring fenced and exempt from motoring offence's.
