Funny, but isn't it cheaper just to pay the cost yourself if it's needed instead of 15 quid a month?
Depends. Like all insurance it's there to cover you for the large bills which you can't pay/meet.
I could say the same with my £400 per annum house cover which I have never claimed on in 20 years. It's a waste of money and I should just pay for damage as and when it crops up. Except if the house was totalled I couldn;t pay the the £280k cost to rebuild it.
Vet's bills can quickly spiral out of control though. In the last two years we have had the following:
One month old foal kicked in the face. Taken to Liverpool hospital, MRI scan, 6 hour face reconstruction surgery (face broken into 18 peices) and one week livery £2,500. WOuld have been more but we had our own transport and my gf got a 33% discount since it was where she trained and her old tutor did the operation.
Our two dogs have the odd vicious fight every now and then.
On 3 occasions and always at the weekend we have had to take one of them to the vets to get stitched up and £200 to £300 each time.
Also, when my other half was a vet in practice, she once treated a dog on Sunday which had been out walking with it's owners and had swallowed a fisherman's tackle (all the hooks and bait). The surgery cost was £500. One expensive walk.
And whatever anybody does, do not go with Equine and Livestock (E&L) or any of their many other pet insurance companies registered at the same address. My gf says they are the worst pet insurance company to deal with and for major (expensive) operations they have to give approval first otherwise they won't always pay out. Early one Sunday morning she needed approval for over £1000 of treatment to pay for a lifesaving operation but they didn't have any staff working who could give authority and she was told she would have to ring back on Monday. Problem for the owners then was their pet only had an hour or two max to live and couldn't afford the operation if the insurance decided on Monday not to pay.
