Err the 5850 has been out nearly a year compared to a card that's been out a few week, it does not have to do anything but perform better and at £199 the 5850 is the way to go.

No it isn't. Replacement ATI Parts are around the corner and the GTX 460 is the best card for the money.

Problem with the 460 is the money you save up front you will more than expend on your power bill over it's life. Atis cards are still the cooler/quieter option. 5850s clock well too :)

Ati also have more room to drop their prices, hopefully sooner than later.

Power consumption is almost identical. The GTX 460 also runs cooler.

Gone for the 5850 myself, will receive it Monday. I mostly play BC2 and it seems the 5850 is a fair bit ahead in that game, but its swings and roundabouts with other games. Don't think you can go wrong with either card.

5970 or 480 because it's best, you can afford it and you might want to play more or the games might need it in 3yrs.

Don't be silly 460 or 5850 looses to 480 and 5970 in benchmarks so they're useless, get the best you can afford even if it costs you an arm and leg ;-).

would go for the HD5850 personally, i have never read a single article anywhere that shows the GTX 460 being superior, infact the whole current NVIDIA line-up seems really average. especially since 'Fermi' was meant to be like some super graphics card, its not really that mind blowing. not to mention they swallow up more power, generate more heat and noise than the ATI cards. no brainer to be honest unless something happens to improve perfomance for the GTX 4** series. :)

You forgot one important iWin factor of the 460.

It's got NVIDIA logo.

thats true, but its the slower of the two cards at well everything as far as i can tell unless its overclocked, but thats not a fair comparison since HD5850s overclock as well. the only thing i have seen them have advantage with is DX11 tessellation, but when heavily tessellated titles appear using DX11 does nobody thing ATI will simply ramp up their tessellation performance...seriously though, if your living in the here and now, HD5850 is the only option

It depends what you want to spend. The HD5850 is the faster card but in terms of bang for buck, both cards are identical.

That's what I was trying to say all the time, around 15% difference in price, 15% difference in performance (comparing the cheapest available). They're both the best cards for the money and it depends on how much you're willing to pay really.

Both cards are fantastic value for money, 5850 is faster but priced accordingly.

So just let your wild fanboy side out to decide what you want as you can't go wrong with either of these cards.

I pondered about both cards as well but am going to wait for the ATI 6000 and see. So hard not to buy something before that though :(

i voted for the 460, it just outclasses the 5850 at a lower price point.

The 5850 is a lot faster and £15 more. I can't see how you consider the faster card to have been out classed, its even stranger considering the difference in price is tiny. It would be money well spent.

If that happens, it simple mean that the 5850 would be due for an upgrade sooner than a GTX460 1GB...unless driver update can somehow miracalously boost tessellations performance for the 5850. GTX460 1GB tessellations capability is a bit higher than 5870...and once overclocked the widen the gap even more.

LoL when heavily tessellated titles appear the 460 and 5850 will be doing 12 and 10 frames respectively in them, them cards will be well out dated by then.
