Em...ain't the almost all the current 5850 in shops now are non-reference? Thought the reference model were long gone in the first 6 months...
Also, are those shops you referring to reputable?

I used two of them in the past with no problems whatsoever. Can't give you the names.

I just want to point that reference models of 5850s are great, there's really nothing wrong with them in terms of noise or temperatures. They overclock highly and going for the more expensive ones may be justified by bundles or high-end coolers in some cases only.

And to be clear, I'm not advising easyrider to buy a Radeon 5850 nor GeForce 460. It's his choice and if I was in his position, I would narrow it down to my budget really. They are both great cards and it's finally the time that the current gen is making some reasonable competition, as can be seen in this thread.

Anyone that is being a fanboy here should stfu really, opinions do not equal facts.

Sorry I didn't mean there were any problem with the reference 5850...hell, I think we all like the reference 5850 more than the non-refernce 5850 because it can bios-flash to Asus's bios. What I was trying to say...wouldn't it be quite difficult to buy a reference 5850 new from shop after the non-reference ones took over for some many months already? I heard currently XFX have reference and non-reference cards, but what you get is purely by luck or something.

What do you base that on? or is that just blind Nvidia fanboy talk.

I base it buying a 5850 earlier this year and have major problems with grey-screen crashing and BBC & ITV HD not working properly.

Whilst many people experience neither issue, many do and both are well-documented, yet ATI did nothing at all to address them. The hardware was great but basically unusable due to these issues so I RMA'd it.

I'm no fanboy and have had loads of both brand card, I just get whatever is best bang for buck at the time. I was willing to give the 5850 a go but the drivers let it down, badly. It's as simple as that. The fanboys are the ones who ignore such well-documented issues as these by sticking their fingers in their ears and simply claiming that "they don't have any problems" so it must be "your machine" (Not claiming you're saying that btw :) )

^^So it's your opinion and personal experience and not fact, state that next time. I'm sure the majority of ATI owners out there are more than satisfied with the drivers as I am.

Yeah picked myself up a 5970 lol,^^ and what that has to do with drivers I don't know, just trolling looks like.

LOL, you're complaining that my comment "ATI's drivers are a joke" is my opinion rather than fact and I should clarify that? Of course it's my opinion, I'd have thought that was fairly obvious without me having to explictly state that

Can't be bothered arguing tbh, your reputation on here precedes you so I know there's no point.

I can agree that some Catalyst drivers may not work as they were intended to in the first place but that is easily reversible and you can always shift around between the drivers simply by installing the newer/older version as an upgrade (no problems with that). Afaik, and I've been using Nvidia cards for a long time (also having one in my secondary PC), some of the Nvidia drivers are better than the others too.

I never had any issues with 1080p or custom resolution on this Radeon 5850 but had troubles with getting along with my TV when using GeForce 7600GS and later on - GeForce 9600GSO.

@stulid

Picture is for the lulz only.

I suggest you read the sticky at the top of this forum by Fire Wizard, your post is inflammatory and looks to be looking for attention from ATI owners, how would people react if I jumped in a thread claiming Nvidias drivers are a joke.. RTM central.

5850

  • Uses less power
  • Performs better
  • Overclocks better

460 - 1Gb

  • Is marginally cheaper
  • Cuda and Physx
If it was my money I'd be going for a 5850 /vote
