Hi!!

A colleague at work is in need of a new computer and they've been looking at the following system for £650:

Acer Aspire M5811

So far I can't really beat it:

Ah, I've been out of system building for 2-3 years so it's all new. The family use it for general tasks (internet, photo editing, word processing) and the dad uses it for casual gaming. They rarely upgrade so they wanted to make sure it's future-proof. The system they have now is 8 years old :o. I think the specs fairly good, apart from the 5400rpm hard drive.

apart from the dire GT320 gpu, which is just naff.

and the 6GB memory? which is weird for a dual channel memory controller that the i5/i3 has, which suggests the system builder of that pc doesn't have a clue.

The problem I'll have is it's half as much storage, 1/3 less ram but costs £10 more. He wont understand it's actually better.

It's a system made by Acer which is surprising.

Have a stupid spec if you really want lots of memory and HDD space, gimped the graphics card but if it's just 'casual' gaming it doesn't really matter. ;)

Tell them it's a faster graphics card, CPU has twice as many cores (double the power!), the HDD spins faster, mobo can take two graphics cards at once, RAM is more than 60% faster and other BS (which is true in fact):

I like that spec.

Could you not also explain that the acer would only likely have 1 year warranty, whereas a lot of the parts in a custom build have say 2-5 years(1 minumum)?

Good point, will keep the misses happy.

Not sure about the quality of VTX cards considering they only come with 1 year warranty, but yeah it's a decent enough spec.

It's basically Powercolor afaik.

yeees.

get the spec nailed down in this post then show him the post, tell him that just like you, we also know what we're doing.

and if you tell the wife that acers are known to: blow up/fall apart/get your daughter pregnant and run away (delete as appropriate) she'll be onboard too. :D
