OcUK's plans for the future and new blood...

No it wasnt, it was taken 3 feet away at 18mm on a 1.4 crop sensor, in the dark with an sb600, on devils point. Your grossly overexaggerating. The bus stop one was in the daylight on the road that leads from the Hoe to Milbay, again from around 10 feet away.

I got responses such as "it wouldnt be so bad if it was a decent car" to "no one wants to see pics of a ***** passat".

And then someone posts up pics of their 318i and cue a thread 3 pages long of how great their new car is.

The original photos you put up were so bad I thought your post was a joke. Look at how I argue with the BMW sport crowd, I am not one of them and coming from a completely open perspective. My dad has almost the exact same Passat as you, a diesel highline or some such and he loves it in comparison to all the other saloon cars he tried. Can you post the photos again so people can see what you are trying to defend.

You'll get random comments wherever you post. I get them as well - yes, when I post a BMW, somebody will invariably make a negative comment. Shock horror! It doesn't matter - its opinion, they are entitled to it and I invited it by posting pictures of my car on the internet.

Had you posted a proper thread about 'My new Passat' with some half decent pictures, a description of why you chose it and how it fits your circumstances you'd have got the same.

But you didnt, all you've really done is post grainy photographs and constant posts about how really fast it is when its remapped, how you think you should swap it for an auto and how you want an M3 instead  Your last set of pics wasn't that bad, and as a result... neither was the thread you posted them in!

Then you blame everyone else for the responses

Two things come to mind:

Bigotry/racism/homophobia/muslim hatred has got way out of hand lately. There's a vocal minority here who are making many threads very uncomfortable reading.

We're constantly being told this is a family forum with zero tolerance of swearing, yet the level of discrimination here is appalling. What poses a bigger threat to the family? Please sort this out.

Re technical issues: I gave up posting in those forums a few years ago where every other post was 'change your PSU' or posters passing off opinion as fact (or worse). Hey, if you don't know something, don't pretend you do ok? (Mind you, this still happens everywhere unfortunately).

Oh, the constant childish Console and iPhone/Apple bickering is tiresome.

I'll add my 2p here. All of the rules are regularly reviewed by the MM Dons and they all have an important function in making the MM the safe place to trade that it is. I don't apologise for them being perhaps a bit harsh or strict, they are there to protect our members and it works the vast majority of the time. I also feel that people reading them and following them isn't an unfair request. I know you may be a member of many forums, but if you want to trade here I don't think it's unreasonable for you to have a quick re-read of the rules.

As some of you may know, we've recently implemented infractions, so that all warnings result in a PM telling you what rule you've broken. We want to help people by explaining why we do what we do, but if you don't read and follow the rules this will result in a suspension.

We've also made a list of minor and major rule breaks. Minor rule breaks such as split requests will result in an infraction, warning you of what you did and how it's against the rules. It's only after you don't heed this warning will it result in a suspension. These two minor rule breaks add up to one major strike. Major rule breaks such as thread trashing or bidding disrupt the sale and only hinders a transaction for everyone. These will remain an instant suspension, but we will still give an infraction explaining the suspension for you to read when the suspension is over. 3 strikes and MM access is removed.

Remember that MM access is a privilege for our trusted and valued members, and that we do need to keep it a safe place for everyone.

Thanks burnsey, that implementation is most welcome imho. I've said before i don't intentionally break rules, and i do read them, not often enough, but we're all human and we ALL of us make mistakes. The PM warning, is great, it would certainly help me out if i've dropped a clanger in MM somewhere.

A great improvement, thanks for listening fellas. :)

One of the problems the forums have has come to light in this very thread, it was meant to be discussing potential ideas and ways to improve things yet the usual bickering that seems to creep into threads has found it's way here...........

And you could say that making subtle digs like that ^ without explanation or discussion is often part of the problem.

.

There is an RTM alert in place as I'm sure you're aware of.

Despite vigilance by admins, mods and people who RTM, there are some things that will slip through the net.

I think ignorance is more the issue with some people rather than outright hatred but that's just my view of it.

Just my two penny worth but the forum seems to be much less mature than it was a short time ago. Everything is now very sarcastic, a lot more "stupid" replies than serious ones. There are still very good threads - witty and serious - but sometimes a person creates a thread and gets ripped apart by the same generic responses.

^^^ To add to this, OCUK is no longer my main supplier of tech info when i need it.
I actually (probably like a lot of you) copy'n'paste my questions into a few of the internet tech forums i'm a member of. Mainly because so much tripe gets posted on here that you can no longer be confident of getting decent responses, so i hedge my best with other forums too.
I still like these boards for various reasons, but sometimes can't be bothered to sift through the garbage posts to get to what i really want to know.
I guess the mods feel that way too when they have to moderate such rubbish.

My 2p.

Generally I have no issues with the way the forum is run. It does go through phases of lots of spam threading being posted but these are normally jumped on fairly rapidly, (although I am surprised how high some posters who look to have joined in the last month or so have their post counts already).

A couple of minor changes I would suggest are

1). This is supposed to be a family friendly forum but the way that the GD masses jump on any weight related thread is at times pretty disgusting. In my opinion the attitudes allowed to be shown are detrimental to the reputation of the forum. An example would be this current thread. A bit more moderation in these thread to keep them within decent limits would be good.

2). RSS "Spam bots" ... we all see the posters which just start a thread with a link and zero discussion. I suggest that moderators just delete this threads. This is a discussion forum, if the OP has no opinion to express on what they are posting then they should not be posting it.

3). Please implement spoiler tags ... it would really help in the Music/Video/etc forum ...

It's always like this during summer. More kids around.

I think what you want to do will take a lot more moderation than you are thinking, you do need a few technically minded mods but over the past few months you need a gilly to stop the spam.

No say you should bring gilly back as we never saw eye to eye an I think he is and egotistical forum bully due to the position he had, but apart from that he did make this place a lot more spam free.

But either way i think the level of moderation on a whole is ok but their is amiss match in standard, things you would get banned for go unnoticed in motors but that comes down to individual moderators.

KaHn

So I was effective because you want someone to do the job I was doing, but I was an egotistical bully due to the position I had?

My approach to things has changed over the years, but not because of any of the positions I have held. In my real life I have gone from desk based 2nd line engineer to area support manager for England during the time I've been a member here. That should provide more of a chip on my shoulder than any position of an online forum (even if it is by far the best ;)).

No, my approach to things has changed because I have changed. Not due to the role I was carrying out, but because people change a lot from 19 to 30 years old.

At no point would I accept I've bullied someone. Perhaps taken a hardline approach, but only due to the other party's stupidity or angst.

As for the whole muslim thing, every time you post something bad a so called muslim has done in the name of their god, such as suicide attacks, its a "very small minority" but everytime a poster of muslim faith posts about some guy abusing them on the street its a "non muslim majority" and anyone who disagrees is "racist"
