OcUK's plans for the future and new blood...

What part of what you quoted has anything to do with sexuality? Stop playing the wounded lamb. I brought up something I felt needed to be addressed and we discussed it like adults, which is exactly what you're asking for in this thread.. more adult discussion and less childish replies.

No but my reply to it would have  he was asking what generic replys **** people off and my answer would have been the children who just reply to every thread as "gay"

OK?

If you read what I quoted again you may actually understand

I totally agree with this and I have an endless list of people I can name. I also try to avoid controversial threads because I know arguments can get out of hand and lead to personal attacks.

Edit :A very good example is the Draw Muhammed thread. That just got way out of hand and was very offensive.

There's a difference between racism and being offended.

So what if you're offended? Does being offended cause any harm? Be offended all you like, but move on.

The world would be a boring place if people were constantly wary of offending others.

If people are being racist or saying abusive things in threads such as the ones mentioned why not just ban them from posting in said forum. If Muslim thread has started in GD and someone posts abuse, limit the posting of said member to the hardware section only. After all thats why most of us joined up, to ask about overclocking etc.

Just a tought

It wasnt that at all mate, it was more the little snidy posts people (who apparently just by coincedence) have a bmw or series of bmw's in their signatures, such as, on a thread where someone is asking if anyone has owned a passat and what was it like etc, they put "its ok i suppose, for a vw" or "its rubbish, buy a 318i instead" and other such comments. Look at them from a normal perspective, for example if you owned a passat and not a bmw, and you would see how it can easily be percieved.

Its also the same that you stated someone had gone from merely ok to "instant awesomeness" because they bought a ropey old xsara gti with a supercharger, when you just happen to have owned a xsara as your first car.... then the next minute you know everyone is quoting your comment with "+1" etc. If i came on and said id just bought a mg metro turbo for £400 you would be telling me how **** it is.

There is definetly the element of "we are better than you because of what we drive" in motors and I am not the only other "troll" who dont agree with your bmw cliques presence.

Absolutely full of **** as always.

I'm no saint but how much grovelling did you have to do to get yourself un-perma'd? You seriously need to sort that massive chip on your shoulder.

I didn't think it was funny.

At whose expense, we have just been posting endless examples of ppl being offended and you think its funny.

But isn't that the point? One man's humour is another man offense?

I'm certainly not condoning it, but we all have differing opinions. Some people find the notion of [any] religion and all its beliefs totally ludicrous, others live their lives according to those beliefs.
I'm one of the former, but i absolutely would not post offensive comments like those in the thread concerned.
But, [obvisouly] some do, and think its funny.
We can't legislate for what people find funny/offensive.
Likewise we cannot start throwing the ban hammer around if someone RTM's a post in a thread about race/religion.

As has been said though, respect/courtesy is very important and doesn't cost a penny. Wish people would employ it a little more when posting contradictions to an OP's belief. Flaming for the sake of it, is not needed, or useful. (but some people find it funny :()

You can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time....lol, mods are gonna have a hard going forward jobmethinks.

What would people think if we banned threads relating to race, region and immigration?

Might help clean up the place and prevent people from being offended in some way.

On a side note. How about a sub forum for people to post tips and 'Know how's'!! What I mean is this. There are a lot of people on here who have some sort of expertise in a certain field of something and are always posting info on how to do such things.

Like Silicones expresso thread and the numourous 'cooking with' threads. They are all good but how about us having threads all in one places.

Me for instance I am a Butcher and Fishmonger so I have excellent skills in all aspects of both trades. I could start a thread on how to 'de-bone a leg of lamb ready for roasting', 'how to fillet a trout' etc. Im sure there are a lot of peole on here who would like to try these sort of things out and it would certainly help out the large number of students who frequently ask for advice on how to cook things. Not having a dig at you students but there are a large number of 'how do you cook this' threads.

I am sure there are a great number of people in specialist trades that could help other members out. Building candy for instance, how awesome are his skills!!!!! Im sure he could pass on some tips and info on what he does to help out other who may have a project going of some sort..

I would love to share my skills with members on here.
Just an idea.

Start there and where do you stop. What next, spec me threads, jokes… People here get offended by almost every subject. Don’t bury the subjects in the backwater of Speakers Corner for the same old faces to ramble on ad infinitum. The subjects are discussed in the press and in everyday life and should remain in GD. If you get rid of them you’ll have to read every post to ensure that nothing about those subjects has been mentioned. Moderating will be even harder than now.

Leave it as it is but start banning people for racial indiscretions. I’m sure that you get a lot more RTM if you go down that path. I read some of these threads and it seems to me that the moderating team turn a blind eye to what is going on so there has to be some action at the source. For the people that complain in general about these threads I say one thing, you don’t have to read them just the same way you don’t any other thread.

What would you define as a 'racial indiscretion' though? Surely that would be very difficult to mod consistently?

I don't envy you mods on this one, my personal point of view is that freedom of speech should be exercised - I personally hate the BNP and their ilk but an unfortunate side-effect of living in a democracy is that everyone has a right to express their view.
One man's joke is another's insult unfortunately. Obviously anything that could potentially damage the shop's reputation should be clamped down on, but if someone is not using overtly offensive language or directly attacking other posters I'm not sure what can be done.

This is what I am getting at. It annoys me more that people that join the forum like yesterday and rack up like 2000 posts, majority of it spam and insults are not disciplined.

Most of these 09 joiners etc just spam to get free delivery, or to pass their school holiday with them generic forum replies to put ppl down.

There needs to be some sort of Rep system like I have seen in other forums, where you can rate someone on the quality of their posts.
It's a nice idea with good intentions, but Rep systems don't really work.

The BNP got more than half a million votes in the last election. Genuinely scary.

It depends whose expense the joke is at also, veiled or not.
