Hi all - what's the best gfx card for around the £150 mark for an upgrade from a 3870? Could go poss maybe £20 ish more - but only if it was really worth it. Prefer it to run quiet-ish.

Thanks

At that price, it has to be GTX460 768MB. Try to get the MSI standard GTX460 768MB (not the PC Cyclone version) for around £155 (not available here), as you can overvolt for overclocking with MSI Afterburner.

But if you stretch to £190, you could consider getting the Gigabyte GTX460 1GB with the beefy cooler.

The 1GB version of the GTX460 not only has more memory, but also has 32 ROPs comparing to 768MB version's 24ROPs. Also the twin fan cooler is apparently very quiet, even at 70% fan speed. See here for more info/impression regarding it:

Of if you prefer ATI, you could consider 5850, but that is around £200.

But if you are really not planning on stretching the budget that far, then a GTX460 768MB with a reference cooler.

+1 for the 460 768MB, seems to be bang on your budget, if you preferred ATi you could always take a look at the 5830 for a similar price.

Thanks chaps. Is the only ATI alternative the 5850? Are the others quite a drop off performance-wise? Also what's the 465 series? I'm a bit confused as the 1gb versions of those are less than the 460 1gbs in some cases.

Keep away from a 465, they're a joke. ATi alternatives would be a 5850, and a 5830 to an extent. Personally, I'd suggest you got a 1GB card though, I think a 5850 would slightly edge a 460, but it is more expensive.

But I wouldn't be buying a card now with less than 1GB of RAM.

I was under the impression that the 465s that unlocked to 470s were just a handful because they didn't have "real" 465s at the time?

technically none of nvidias line up is 'real' by that logic

When you consider the fact that they disable shader clusters on the chip itself, then it can't work like that.

Which means you can use 470 GPUs on 465s and they're "Not real" 465s because "real" 465s have the shader clusters hard disabled.
