if some berk with a few hundred posts comes in shouting the odds, it makes me raise an eyebrow and think "go away"

Everyone has to start somewhere though.......we all start with the same 0 and have to build up post counts.....some people with a low post count can, and sometimes do, have a good valid opinion......not me though :D

Is very useful in Members market as well as the trust they have earned, post count helps me decide to buy or not.

I like to make friends with people with high post counts because it makes me part of the leet populars.

On a serious note, I don't care if someone has 1 or 10000. We're all still sad acts on a computer forum talking about how awesome we are.

I recognise people by their sig normally now.

Post count is a good indicator of people who are active and involved with helping and informing people. A part for Tefal who just spams. :D

Though I agree that we should keep post counts, couldnt the people that use it for MM transactions view them via the members profile/trust page?

When I use the MM I tend to be quite thorough and if post counts were disable in the normal threaded view I cant see how it would be a massive burden to view them via the member profile/trust page.

Back on point, I do tend to qualify posts (especially ones I disagree with or points I wasnt aware of) by using a combination of post count and join date. What I dont like is spammers - perhaps it would be useful to use a function of the post counts per day to weed/shortlist such users?

ps3ud0

Sometimes I look at post count but it doesn't really change how I perceive someone, unless it's someone being really annoying with 10 posts to their name, they then become not just annoying but annoying noobs.

It doesn't really worry me so much in MM either as some people only really post in MM - the trust system (and in no small part, join date) takes care of any erm ... trust issues.

it does not change the way i perceive one, more a case of other users SPAM to gain a higher number of posts.

keep. for all the reasons listed earlier.

To deal with excessive spam just implement a "temp ban spam script" based on frequency, length of post etc = few hours ban

I would like to see a private post rating system (private as in only you can see it) that would help you keep track of what your opinion was on a user.
e.g. you could have options of +1 +5 +10 to rate the post with also -1 -5 etc for posts/users.
So over time you could build up a "Respect" profile. Note this would only be viewable to you so no competition or such would be involved.

That's quite an interesting idea and not one I've heard of before (which instantly makes it unlikely as it would have to be a hack/mod to vB) and it would skirt the problem of competitiveness. However I'm not sure of the point really, I know the people I respect and tend to remember them for their contributions - it might be good for a statistical comparison of how my opinion changes if it does but aside from that I don't think I'd use it much.

Ot but related to post count will the remembrance day charity post auction be on this year, i don't think i saw it last time :(
