Tell me about the MG TF

For 3K I'd be wanting the 160bhp Trophy version with the 4 pot AP racing brakes upfront, which would rip an MX a new bottom in a straight line.

Realistically their would be very little in it, what with the MG weighing 100kg more...

EDIT:- LOL at the tyre advisory. This was to stop morons or women fitting Lunglings to the rear to prevent them ending up in a ditch, as the car was RWD. Talk about jumping on the bandwagon with ill-informed misinformation.

That's funny, I dont remember seeing every other RWD car ever made also coming with warnings about needing a specific kind of Tyre to prevent said "morons" or for some bizarre reason a specific gender fitting cheap tyres?

guy at work has a british racing green MG TF

he had a headgasket meltdown biut it was covered under dealer warranty! and then his radiator rotted and he had a new one at £300-400 or something!

bt he seems to like it, or grin and bear it should i maybe say

A one off, surely?! As even Lotus used the engine apparently?! I refuse to believe it and will not be jumping on this bang wagon with no substance.

i did cringe when he said it, you can get like aluminium high performance for about 150 i think but he';s not a car person and he definately didnt want to know that he'd been shafted so i left him to it.

Fair enough, people get shafted by mechanics all the time, but its not really fair to quote inflated repair costs when making a point about a car. It's like all the times people quote DMF failure on a Mondeo to cost £1500 or something silly....

It was a few small things, which turned into something bigger.

The main one was the use of plastic dowels, and a headgasket made of the wrong material, which expanded at a different rate to the head and block.

The K series was designed to heat up super quickly and was years ahead of the competition with regards to its long bolts holding all the bits together.

Im pretty sure the lotus solution was to either force the engine to warm up much more slowly and evenly by fitting a higher rated thermostat into the cooling system.

I might be wrong about that though, and am happy to be corrected.

The VVC was almost a work of art, and did very well with reliability considering the mechanical complexity of the VVC system.

Well that's funny because they are still made and sold and the F/TF was a constant top seller for years.

Apart from when production of the MG TF stopped in 2005, when MG Rover went into receivership....

It resumed production in 2007 under the company's new owners Nanjing.

Top seller? Hmm.

Produced by a company no longer in business because they built cars nobody wanted.

really?

Thats why there are so many on the roads, and the MG ZR was extremely popular and is seen everywhere?

In addition the ZT was acclaimed as being one of the best cars MG Rover had built regardless of the source of some of its components! (e.g BMW engine)

I dont understand what drives people to talk such nonsense sometimes.

The cars MG rover produced were fantastic value, and a proper British brand.

They were undone by the Phoenix crooks behind the scenes.

My dad had an MG TF, he hated it so much he replaced it with a brand new Astra :(

See how naff they are? To drive a previously sane man to that?

If you want a 2 seater soft top for sensible money, the MX5 wins, simple as. If youi want something a bit different, the Mk3 MR2 is still lots of fun. I drove one recently and it was a hoot to throw around, just a different feel than the MX5. A bit more tail-happy but nevertheless a good laugh. Space for luggage etc is abysmal though.

The only time to consider a TF above either is if they haven't imported the MX5 or the mR2. Then it is a good choice. Saying it'll blat along faster in a straight line is probably true of the 160 but if you want to blat along in straight line buy an FI mx5 as there are plenty about for the money that a decent 160 would cost and they will be significantly faster and handle much better. Thus the MG TF is rather pointless.

Where they really come into their own is a value for money proposition.

Look at the cost of a tidy TF 160, then the cost of an MX5 of the same age/mileage/spec. Add on the cost of an FI setup......
