Need Help - Re Bank Fraud

Sounds like B/S to me . I reckon the OP thought he could scam the bank and just call the fraud squad and get the money back once he had what he wanted.

Pretty sure you wouldn't need account details to transfer money from your savings account with that bank to your current account, and it would be instant too - at least on my Lloyds account I have a few 'internet' savings accounts where money goes to and from them instantly.

Also the taking out loans, extending overdraft etc can all be done instantly online too if they have your password and security details etc.

The bit I don't understand is how you got cash out and the switched card, the only thing I can think is that

a) Someone stole your phone and targeted you
b) They called a taxi driver to get you and take you bac
c) The driver took you to a fake cash machine or something that took your card and pin, then spat out a different card

In other words, look in 6 months for your appearance on 'Hustle', unlucky :p

Or alternatively, you've been internet-banking scammed, and debit-card scammed independently on the same night, in which case, double unlucky :p

What does it matter that they moved money from your savings account to your current account? The only difference is one has a card through which they could only steal your daily withdrawal limit.

To make the story even more fishy HSBC has a daily limit of transferring only 10k to a "friend or family" which this payment would be so don't know where the 20k loss has come from....

I've used HSBC internet/phone banking for seven years. You need to know an eight digit security code (which is not your PIN number or anything like it unless you set it as such, which is just stupid) to use any of its features. CS will never give this out and they will only do a reset by post.

Assuming they had your card and PIN, the best they could have done was to pull £300 out of an ATM and drain your current account through card purchases. Even then, the alarm bells would go off if you made a large number of high-value purchases. HSBC have called me several times after I bought flights or computers to check I was the buyer.

This story makes no sense. I am not surprised HSBC are refusing to cover your losses.

My guess is the Taxi Driver stood over him because it was 5:30am in the morning, no doubt the OP was clearly drunk, being picked up from a club to take him home. He had no cash to pay the Taxi Driver, which was the reason he stopped at the cash machine. No doubt the Taxi Driver went right up to it with him to make sure he didn't try and do a runner. Makes sense to me.

What I don't get, as others have said, is if your card was already stolen and replaced with another, how you withdrew cash with a fake, or somebody else's card.

Also, I don't understand how the bank is refusing to give you certain information? You are still the account holder. For example, I've had my fraud on my bank account a couple of times. Both times I was able to login online and I could see the details of the transactions that they had made.

OK firstly for all of those calling BS - what would be the point? I've been a member since before these boards were re-done so I've seen the abuse people get for talking ****.

I, like everyone else (inc the bank) cant understand how my card has got switched that late on. I took £20 out around 5.30am, someone else (from a cash point) at 6.30am, it wasnt an HSBC though apparently - I assume this was the people with the card checking the pin was correct etc.

They didnt take all the money out online, they simply transferred my online saver to my current account (£14,500). They then opened a loan £3,000 instantly paid as good credit rating. They then increased my overdraft to £4,000 - instantly done again due to good rating. I had £2,000 in the current account. So ignoring the overdraft, which HSBC put back to its original the value is approx £20k. The loan was taken while I was on the phone to HSBC, as was a bank transfer for £6,200 - they stopped this payment apparently.

As I've said I haven't been able to see my full bank account and they have said the whole time, until today, that I should get a full refund. The online banking has been turned off so I can't see exactly what has happened.

HSBC dont seem to be saying that I have done the crime, they seem to be saying the criminals had too much information, therefore its my fault - can they do that? HSBC also dont seem to have any limits on moving savings like Lloyds do, or they didnt work.

I didnt call the taxi, he stopped to see if I needed a lift as I was sat down trying to work out where my friend lived, as his address was in my phone and I had no phone to call him - I also dont know London very well at all.

As far as the fraud team incinuated (sp?) the account number was given over the phone as they knew enough information, I dont know how they could have got my password also, thats why I want a transcript of the conversation.

At the minute I'm veering towards the taxi driver, as he would have been able to drive quickly to a cash point after dropped me off, but unless he is a master pickpocket it doesnt add up at all.

Will let you know how I get on, but right now I just feel sick.

If it involved the taxi driver, it would not have been just him. Someone takes the phone, and tips the taxi driver off who then stops and see's if you need a lift.

But then...how would he know you needed to stop at a cash machine?

What details are stored on your online banking? Does that contain your account numbers? As they could have used your unlocked email to get the passwords to your online banking account.

Have you got the police involved, because if you haven't you should...

I've done a crime reference and stuff with them but the bank said they should be able to sort it. Though I'm now waiting for a call from the bank tomorrow and then back to the police I think.

Even with my phone they would have struggled for information I would have thought. I'm totally gobsmacked really so will just see what happens. Glad I'm still living and home and hadnt managed to get the place I wanted to rent recently, or I'd be homeless!

Monster it appears that they transferred everything into your current account, loans, overdrafts, savings etc, but they tried to make a withdrawal and that was stopped.
Surely that means nothing is gone from your account, you are just left with a loan and an overdraft you don't want and an account you can't access?

Was about to say they can put it all in one place but how would they get it out? It would leave an accout trial which would lead them right to the account holder the money got transferred to, with Nationwide they have a £600 withdraw limit per day, £300 from ATM and £300 over the counter HSBD would have the same?

They used the current account for the purchases. £600 at Debenhams / £??? at Currys (think it was a few £k) and then Kanoo which is a foreign exchange shop thing. I think for Kanoo, it was 2 x £4,900 and 2 more attempted payments which were stopped. I assume Kanoo just gave them the cash and off they went, I've never been in one myself but want to speak to them but I get more info to see if they have the CCTV etc.

I'm hoping that the Debenhams and Currys were stopped - unless it was a sale in a shop (I dont know yet) and therefore its the 2 Kanoo payments. However HSBC havent given me exact figures yet either, which is starting to drag seeing as I need to keep borrowing money from my mum and GF to keep petrol in the car etc.

Right gonna watch some TV to chill out.

Go have a thorough look through the HSBC website and look for the something like requesting account information. If it mentions that your account details won't be given over the phone, you can take the bank to the cleaners because YOU SHOULD KNOW YOUR OWN ACCOUNT and they should only ask you to verify the PIN and never the other way round AND they should never give your information out over the phone and without visual ID no matter how convincing

I tried to have a look but couldn't find anything, go find anything sent to you from the bank with regards to your account and read EVERYTHING to see if anything suggests the same as what I've said.

I'm with someone else and on their website it says that they will never ask for account numbers as they know who I am as I've logged in.

Give it a try

Your story is hard to believe but it's 20k for god's sake, go and seek some professional advice ie lawyer and don't waste your time in here, OcUK won't bring you back your hard earned 20k.

Contact newspapers etc that the bank is refusing to help you, once this will end up in papers bank will surely refund you your money.

Surely the only time the card could have gone missing is after withdrawing money...calling into question the 'Taxi driver' (was it a proper hackney carriage, sounds suspicious, but anyway I digress)

If that's the case then being London there is bound to be some sort of CCTV of the 'Taxi' in the vicinity of the cash point for the ID of the vehicle and driver.

That's if you ignore the vast amount about this story that doesn't add up.
