Star Wars The Old Republic what class you playing?

That argument is only valid if the 1 enemy or 10 enemies were equally strong. More fun to fight off numbers than just one. If you can just survive both engagements it takes similar skill, maybe more with multiple targets :)

Well, I play Aion, and Mobs on Aion can be a challenge, and unless you are either a healer or a good few levels above them, taking on multiple targets is a big no no, that makes me feel heroic that I can defeat something that can hurt me, rather than crappy little mobs that I can almost 1 shot..

SIth Inquisitor.

and for everyone wondering, NO it is NOT instanced. 90% is open world, 10% is instanced (battlegrounds, flashpoints, etc)

Jedi, will be my first outing into an MMO. Only playing because I loved KOTOR. What is instanced and open ground?

Essentially instanced is when an area is separate from the main game world, usually requiring a load screen to enter it. Often the instance is limited to just you or your group and nobody else can enter it. Some pvp "battles" in many MMOs are instanced, forming a minigame between two even teams of players, say 8 v 8 or 16 v 16. Often in MMOs "dungeons" are instanced and only your group can enter your version of the "dungeon". World of Warcraft is an example of an MMO which incorporates instancing.

Open world MMOs have no instancing, usually there are no loading screens and pvp is all performed within the main game world so no capped limits on the number of people who can participate in the fighting. In many of these style of MMOs you just don't know when or where you will be attacked. Dungeons in such MMOs are usually open to everyone, so there may be many groups of people in a dungeon at once. Ultima Online is an example of an open world MMO.

Thanks for clearing that up, so this will only be 10% instanced? So basically you could get attacked 90% of the time?

I don't know I'm afraid, I am not sure how pvp is being handled in this, don't think they have actually said yet. It could be that you can only be attacked if you turn on your pvp "flag" and thereby consent to the pvp ( which I dont like) or it could be that you can be attacked anywhere at anytime (which I do like).

I should add that there is no right and wrong between instanced and open world. It's very much down to personal tastes and in my experience also down to when you began playing MMOs, I generally find that people who started playing MMOs in the late 1990s and early 2000s are usually the folks who lean towards open world MMOs and those people who started playing MMOs after the mid 2000s are usually the folks who lean towards MMOs incorporating instancing.

Any news on the PVP aspect of this game ?

ID like to try smuggler or the Imperial Equivalent but ill play what ever is FoTM and most overpowered for the first few months.

It's not instanced it's "phased", probably technically not the same thing but the result is the same.

As far as I have read it will incorporate both instancing AND phasing, certainly what I have read of the "battlegrounds" indicates they are instanced not phased :)

Thats the part I want to know about the most.

I want to know if I can attack any enemy player anywhere, or whether they have to be "flagged". I want to know if all the PvP is restricted to instanced battlegrounds or whether there is open world PvP. I want to know if the open world PvP is in all zones, or just in 1 or 2 specific zones where its allowed. I want to know if I can PvP in space or whether the space combat section is only against AI. I want to know if I can loot the players I kill in PvP and what the penalties for death are. I want to know if I can turn on the group I am in and betray them and help the mobs we are killing by attacking the groupmembers instead.

These are the things that I really want to see the answers to, those answers will dictate to me whether SWTOR is something that I really want to play or whether its another watered down MMO that isnt my cup of tea.

I want to know all of those questions except the one I put in Bold, it isn't going to happen, simple as. You and your group are all on the same side fighting the same enemy, You cant just switch.

Ten "crappy" mobs are just as tough if they're all beating on you. Look up zerg :)

Well what I meant was, If you were storming an enemy base, just you and a small amount of people in your group against lots of enemies. Me personally I would feel a lot more heroic if it had been a hard battle and I had only just survived to blow it up, rather than to have to face enamies that are going to barely touch me and my group easily complete the instance, you see what I mean?

Thats a real shame, in a game where my moral choices are able to dictate what happens I really should be able to turncoat. Betrayal is a steadfast feature in the Star Wars universe, happens on many occasions , both in the books and in the movies.

What you ask is already possible in almost all party based MMORPGs and will likely be in the old republic too... If you want to betray your party and let the mobs win then simply stop fulfilling your role... (for example) Tanks stop tanking.. healer stop healing... DPS run round and aggro everything...You can wipe a party/raid in no time if you want. Now maybe you want the mobs to realise that you are helping them and respond, to be honest its likely they will just take advantage of the confussion and crush you faster... Besides they may just mistake bad play for betrayal which would be quite funny in itself but not something that could be discriminated.

On a true PvP server, all you'd do is disband from the group, then start attacking. Just make sure you're out of the aoe at this point eh ;)

And a true PvP server there'll be 4 jedi, 17 smugglers and 2679 bounty hunters - well that's my guess anyway :D

I have to be honest I don't even know the classes, or what they can do. As much as I'm going to play this game regardless, I just haven't spent any time looking into it. Yet.

Thats not really the same though is it, if I want my character to turncoat and aid the bad guys by attacking the group I am with (or aid the good guys by attacking the group of bad guys I am with) then I should be able to attack my group. With as you rightly say the mobs realising that I have changed allegiance and helping me out against my former allies (healing me and so forth). Thats the kind of dynamics that we should be aiming for in MMOs after 15 years, would make for some awesome roleplay situations too.

What would be even better would be if a group of enemy players were also in the "dungeon" and upon seeing you betray your group they came to help you out and a battle ensued.

Absolutely, that would be perfect (along with the mobs realising you had changed allegiances and helping you out). Are they having such rules on their PvP servers though? Or are the PvP servers just going to be factional based PvP where you cant attack unless your target has flagged themselves in advance? Are they having PvP servers for that matter?
