froyo for desire starts this weekend

It's a disgrace of an 'update' to be honest. I've just lost a lot of respect for Vodafone

Thats due to you debranding the phone. This update they just put out is for the branded people which are now more branded so to speak :(

If I did this, is there a way to roll back to the Voda ROM should I need to take it for repair?

i don't think the branding would void any warranty as im pretty sure it gets sent straight to HTC now and not vodafone, also if you buy a HTC desire on vodafone from say for example phone4u it will be unbranded anyway.

furthermore, i bet you can download a stock vodafone rom from somewhere.

i fully recommend it, i hate all that branding rubbish and you get a HTC desire as they intend it to be.

Not after this update, a phones4u customer posted on the vodafone forum saying his phone now has this new branding.

Could I have a link to the firmware/guide? Do I need to root the phone to do this?

i followed this dude's ones and it worked a treat

i accept no responsibility for anything at all! i also dont know any more than whats in the guides ( which i found by googling 'debrand htc desire' )

gold card tool: http://android.modaco.com/content/software/308798/pc-application-goldcardtool/

guide: http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/67098-how-flash-debrand-your-desire.html

ignore the part about making a gold card and go to the modaco gold card tool link instead. its much, much simpler.

i actually used a different generic rom from xda developers, but i doubt it matters all that much. just different radio versions, whatever that means. mine works fine but your mileage may vary.

So you debranded the phone then installed the OTA update for Froyo? And all works fine?

I'm just cautious as I don't want an issues further down the line with future OTA updates screwing up my phone.

yeah i did, YOU MUST keep the gold card in when you do the OTA update, loads of us learnt the hard way and had to restore and then do it again. so i now keep my gold card safe.

flash and then goto check for updates, may be a 1 or 2 before you can do 2.2 and then once on 2.2 put your normal sd back in

Had a quick read through the link for making a goldcard, it say you need a spare sd card? Is this true?

yeah, i debranded my phone using the method above and i got the OTA froyo update on sunday.

Just make sure you have the goldcard in the phone when you do the ota update, or things will go entertainingly pear-shaped...which is what happened to me...

If things DO go entertainingly pear shaped with the update, you can just use the gold card method (if you need to, you can just use any old micro sd reader/adapter to create the gold card) to flash back to the generic 2.1 rom and re-do the update with the gold card in...i speak from experience! :D

Once i had the debranding re-done and the gold card in the phone, the OTA update went through flawlessly. :)

nope- i just used the one that came with my phone, then dumped all my music etc on it after i was done updating.

that said, i might make an old 1gig one into a gold card just so i always have one lurking about.

So what is the actual function of this 'gold card'? I don't like the idea that I am reliant on it for future OTA updates - or is this only the case for upgrading to 2.2?

If I don't have an SD card reader, can I create the gold card by mounting the SD card through the phone?
