Taking a risk with a website.........

Okay heres the deal.

I've got the opportunity of buying a website (adult related) for 5 grand.

Common sense tells me not to do it (:p), but i've got a real gut feeling on it. The name is special as hell (only 3 letters long :O), and whilst the guy is asking admittedly to much, i really feel like I could make this site go somewhere.


Anyone care to talk me out of it?

Not discussing the sites name, but its over 16 years old and is in the top 100k sites in the world.

No budging on price. To be honest I didn't expect an answer like the one he gave me, it was totally out of the blue.

It's not a go-er per se, I just think it could be. The guy is doing bugger all with it, yet still getting decent traffic.

I'm thinking of putting my own set of videos and what not on, maybe a small forum and trying to boost numbers whilst trying to get myself in the public lexicon (the name is very memorable).

Or am I to late to the party?

As adult related you need a niche, there are a million sites showing the usual..err.. ways?..positions? .. that precede the .. err.. "main event" .. in adult entertainment.

On the other hand adult internet sites pretty much print money if handled correctly. Users sign up and pay monthly with no admin overhead from you. The only thing you need to do is generate content... kudos if you can figure out a way to get people to pay a monthly sub AND generate the content themselves. Therein lies the perfect business model.

I was thinking of going the same way as generic sites (the hub if you know what I mean ;) ), and hoping to push people onto an easier to spell, more memorable site. I'm at uni so have 10k+ people to reach out to.

I was thinking of making money of sites/commision links?

That is more risky, you seriously don't want to look at violating copyright infringement in the adult business, epically humiliating if dragged through law courts and in many parts of the EU and US adult entertainment is strongly linked with violent gangs, drugs etc..etc...

I honestly don't know if click through sites really make much? It relies on people signing up after connecting through your unique link, you'd think anyone actually paying for pr0n on the internet already knows where to go.

Generating your own content is about the best way to do it, but you have to ensure you abide by the local laws when doing so. This includes things like documenting and submitting evidence on the age of the actors..
 
Without any details it's hard to talk you in or out of it.

What's the reason for the sale?

If what you say there is true and the 3 letter domain is relevant and not a .info or something then it is an absolute bargain.

Sounds too good to be true.......

Not sure I have enough cash to be hiring in "workers" lol. Surely they would be several thousand for each session......not to mention that i'm no performer, so would have to hire in someone else haha.

Oh, I don't have the cash, but my dad said he would lend me the money. Not keen on the idea of borrowing money of him (he's decent as hell, but I wouldn't want to c0ck up at all), but it would at least motivate me to work hard on getting some money back on it.
 
If it's a three-letter .com domain it has potential. Do you have experience in generating revenue from websites? If you don't I'd stay clear.
