iOS4 - iPhone 3G

Anybody else find that Gmail push email isn't working? I have set them up using the Gmail config screen, it worked fine pre iOS4 via Exchange but I can't set it up this way anymore either! :(

another frustrated 16GB 3g user here, updated and now it's lagging. its quite snappy after a hard reset but soon lags up when i start using it.

i've moved all my folders to my final dashboard and that seems to have helped when loading the other 2, but it's still very slow.

i'm not not a patient person, so this is going on our favourite auction site and i'm going to get a Dell streak instead.

if it wasn't for me upgrading I'd remove OS4, its killed the phone imo. So sluggish, can't stream tv, apps's lag, phone is slow, 3g signal is worse and signal is bad. Apple have buggered up.

my ip4 is super fast though

When it comes to iPhone problems I normally experience them all but have to say I haven't had any issues with iOS4 on my 16Gb iPhone 3G.

The upgrade worked first time, it did take a few hours but never crashed and got there in the end. Since upgrading the phone feels slightly faster. I always suffered from a brief pause when opening SMS and Calendar etc and yes that's still there but generally I notice the keyboard doesn't lag as much as it used to. Perhaps I was just way worse off before and this is comparatively better!

Was probably a ruse to make everyone who upgraded from 3Gs to 4 think it was 10 ttimes faster so they'd tell everyone else to buy them!

My iTunes decided to recognise my iphone again last night for the first time in 2 months just long enough to update from 4.00 to 4.01, now it doesnt see it again  but at least it didnt delete all my contacts and messages this time.

Seems more responsive than IOS4.

4.1 is the one that's supposed to bring performance back to the 3G, don't think there's any noted speed improvements in 4.0.1 from what I've read...

Sigh. Just had to get another phone from AppleCare as the replacement they sent me last time had a knackered on button. The replacement this time is running 4.0.1... FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU---

Well in 4.00 it hung for a second or two before recognising my finger swiper to unlock, now it isnt. but dont care about that as much as having no music or videos on the phone

Having (been forced) to use 4.0.1 this evening, I've found it's not too bad. It's nowhere near as fast as 3.1.3, but it's better than 4.0.

I'd DFU firmware restore your phone after a clean installation of iTunes, then see if you can sync up again. Something isn't right with one of your installations matey.

well finally gave up with 4.0.1, just got sick to death of the waiting when wanting to do anything with it.

Back to 3.1.3 now, forgot how quick it was. :D

My iPhone 3G works just as well on iOS4 as it did on OS3.

It's strange that mine seems to be one of the only ones, i've even got multitasking enabled and even that doesn't slow it down at all.

Umm, wtf? Gonna have to call shenanigans until we see proof on that one...!

Can you do me a screenie of your Settings --> General --> About page (serial/IMEI scrubbed out of course) please?

Did you hack-enable multitasking, or was it like that directly post upgrade?

Quickest method for reverting to 3.1.3 is to restore in iTunes followed by using RecBoot (Windows + Mac) to get out of being stuck in recovery mode. All I ever have to do.

Which downgrade process did you use in the end? Any problems?

Only issue I had was that it couldnt restore my backup as it was a backup of the phone when it had IOS 4. So just make sure you backup everything manually, I lost a few pictures but nowt important.

This is the process I used

  • Download firmaware 3.1.3
  • Put phone in DFU mode
  • iTune will tell you that you need to restore, hold shift and click restore, point it to recently downloaded 3.1.3
  • After the restore it will fail and the phone will be the activation loop

now this was were it is a pain in the arse, but only becuase I run windows 7 64bit. Getting libUSB working on this is just to much hassle. I have a just stuck Windows XP 32bit on VMware and installed libUSB on the virtual PC without an issue. Then I downloaded iREB 3.1.3 for windows. run that and click 'break activation loop'. It will do its thing then go to the normal activation mode. plug it into iTune, activate and setup as a new phone.

You have you speedy iPhone back.

I was so close to ditching this phone altogether, it was unuseable, now its back to its best again.

Sorry if it's been mentioned in here already but apparently a few Apple blogs have been saying that turning off the spotlight search on a IOS4 3G will make a huge difference to performance, so might be worth trying that out before downgrading again?
