Jesus Christ! Don't forget to put your seat belts on!

Serious debate, yo.

The police were heavy handed. Not sure there's much to debate here.

Yeh! Sorry, should really have been in 'General'...

Would love to know why they reacted in this way? Maybe there was some bad/threatening/dangerous driving before hand we didn't see?

Earlier the motorist had driven away after being pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt.

So he drove off (in a black Range Rover with a personal number plate) after being pulled over, I'm not surprised that the police acted the way they did.

He was elderly and confused, he admits he drove away because he thought he had been dealt with. At no time did he break any speed limits or drive erratically in his supposed 'get away' and thought he was being an escort home. Considering his medical history and the fact that he pulled over when he realised his mistake I would say the police reaction was decidedly unwarranted.

Climbing on his bonnet to kick in the windscreen and taking a run at him with a baton...please, none if that is neccessary in any circumstance least of all this one.

Ouch! Scary stuff! This is of course the sort of stuff that gives the police a bad name... While 99.9% of the time they're doing a very difficult job well...

Although the police were a touch heavy handed, it does seem some facts are missing from that BBC item.

The police were a little OTT but the driver in question had driven away from the police in the first place, then they chased after him for 17 mins with their sirens and lights going. He didnt stop even though they were tailing him for 17 mins with the blues and twos going because he thought they were "giving him an escort home", he only came to a stop when stingers were deployed and also had an illegal licence plate. I mean lets face it, if I was in the police and some guy I had stopped drives off and then refuses to stop despite me being behind him with my lights going for almost 20 mins then I would be somewhat suspicious too :)

(just in case anyone wondered, this wasnt a doddering old man in a little fiesta, he was driving a £60k range rover, not that it makes a difference other than maybe the image in the readers head)

The police were still heavy handed but its not quite the clear and cut "case" that the BBC have presented.

17 mins!!! :eek::)

OK, that sheds a different light on it... Still not sure about the jumping on the bonnet and kicking the windscreen in!

Did you notice they seemingly didn't simply walk up and open the door?

Obviously that old man is a drug runner in disguise and the police were really after that :>

If this isn't the case however. Meanie police :(

Yeah as I say, the police still went overboard but this was hardly the sweet innocent old man that the article might have you believe.

Illegal licence plate, driving off while being dealt with, not stopping for another 17 mins despite the police sirens and lights. Didnt warrant their reaction but goes to show there is more than one side to the story :)
