Jesus Christ! Don't forget to put your seat belts on!

Unbelievable. Agreed re: not full disclosure on news article, but what warrants that kind of reaction from the police? Someone brandishing a weapon or about to ... swallow their drugs or something? What a farce. But if a copper can kill someone walking home from work and get away with it, then these guys will get nothing but a pay rise.

Did you notice they seemingly didn't simply walk up and open the door?

Doors were locked?

It's pretty easy to flip this story the other way around. Imagine if the guy WASN'T a 70 year old after his medication, and it was actually a stolen car/he was holding drugs/had a weapon and they didn't act in this way. It's only because everything's fine that the force used was excessive, but they weren't to know that and acted based on a worst-case scenario.

I'm assuming kicking in the windscreen is simply to make driving any further on flats harder (can't see) and as said, a shock tactic, and smashing the side window is simply to open the door.

He was elderly and confused, he admits he drove away because he thought he had been dealt with. At no time did he break any speed limits or drive erratically in his supposed 'get away' and thought he was being an escort home. Considering his medical history and the fact that he pulled over when he realised his mistake I would say the police reaction was decidedly unwarranted.

Climbing on his bonnet to kick in the windscreen and taking a run at him with a baton...please, none if that is neccessary in any circumstance least of all this one.

It sounds like he shouldn't have been driving at all then, let alone in a t***mobile.

I think it's easy with hindsight to criticise the police for this, but they had to make a judgement in the heat of the moment and I'm not surprised that they chose to take the course of action they did.

Frankly if the guy is that easily confused that he simply drives off because he thinks the police have "finished with him", then he doesnt stop for 17 mins while they chase him with their blue and twos going because he thinks they were "giving me an escort home", and has mistakenly put illegally formatted licence plates on his 60k range rover.... maybe he is probably not quite fit to be on the roads in the first place if he is that confused :)

You obviously know little about policing. It's a regularly known and used distraction technique for motorists who are believed to have a high risk of driving away (and thus putting officers in close proximity into danger). Admittedly, kicking the windscreen is not part of this technique and I would say was rather silly.

It's obvious that there is more to this story than is reported, so I can't make a judgement to whether it is justified or not.

If this is the case then I would expect this reaction from the police.

just been on me other forum, same story, watched it closely, so, not 'ancient' , dude in stone washed jeans, beer gut, illegal plate, drove off, didnt stop until stinger!!!! then plays the 'poor old ill me' card in court.Deserved everthing he got, and more, he wasnt attacked in any way, shape or form, he was pulled reasonably from the car, standard proceedure to stop drive offs and running down of coppers is to remove driver, and keys.
Coppers knew there video was on, as they had turned it on!

Breaking News! BBC news story in not stating all the facts to grab a sensationalist headline!

exactly

This is perfectly normal tactics when attempting to shock a driver who has run from the police.

I've seen it on road wars and on other police documentaries several times.

He says he ran from the police because he thought they were escorting him home and he thought the matter was dealt with.

BS he did.

He didnt like being told what to do by an officer he saw as young an insubordinate. So he ran away thinking that because he was old, he was above the law.

You see this all the time on traffic cops / road wars as well. They think because they're old they shouldnt have to pay for an MOT / Tyres / Tax / Insurance and dont see why they should follow what the police said.

The fact the old guy didnt speed away from them is nothing either, plenty of people run from the police at the speed limit, thinking its the safest way to do it as it avoids them crashing etc..

exactly

I'm willing to bet money the old guy was hostile to the police officers and refused to accept he had done wrong and needed to pay a fine. When he was told he had to, he was not only rude and un co-operative but then left in a childish tantrum. The whole "i thought they were escorting me" thing doesnt wash with me.

Police can't be lax, it's either no situation or worst case scenario. It may seem excessive but don't bloody drive off for nearly half an hour, what were they to think?

I think it's routine, after watching too many cop shows. :p

Looks to me like the police lost their cool , they knew they were dealing with a pensioner and not John Rambo

Using the baton to smash the drivers/passengers windows is a known technique and is used quite a lot after a pursuit of a stolen vehicle.
I think the officer who jumped on the bonnet may have a few words spoken to him. For his own safety what was he thinking of!!. If the car had driven away again he would be straight under the wheels, silly idea but when 'red mist' decends anything can happen.

Thats disgusting behaviour from the rozzers.

How people think thats acceptable christ knows.

I would only expect that level of agression for a terror suspect.

This country is ****ed up if people think thats acceptable Police behavour for a MINOR motoring misdemenour.

If someone was doing that do my car I would without hesitation run them over.

You run away for 17 mins then run them over... I think the police men/women would annihilate you after that. :p

When someone drives off after being stopped, it's no longer a minor motoring offence.

Entirely justified response, tbh.
