Massive military cuts

:(

It's all very well trying to save money but those are HUGE cuts to personnel

Pretty much sinks my chances of joining the RAF this year :(

We need to re-evaluate what we expect from our military, and work out how best to fund it.

That's the discussion that still doesn't seem to be going on :(

Can I blame it on the Labour government for seriously over spending the country forcing such mental cuts?

In it's simplest, almost playground terms, I think we need a military which can 'have' countries like Afghanistan, Argentina (or any single south american country, as well as any single african country). If push comes to shove, I'd like our military also to be able to 'have' countries up to about Australia levels of military might.

As for paying through the nose to try and put up half a fight against Russia or China or even Iran single handedly? Naah don't bother .. it's so 20th century! And soooo expensive!

Well, if the Govt. didn't keep sending them to places where they really should not be and fighting pretend wars for purely political and financial reasons they would not have become so expensive, it would work out far cheaper for the Country in the long run to keep our Troops at home to defend our Country and get shot of the Govt.

I don't think so. Otherwise the conservatives basically get a free reign to cut anything and everything public, and it's always all Labour's fault.

Which has major dangerous ramifications potentially as they will start doing 'ideology' based cuts, under the flag of 'Labour forced us' rather than the truth. I want to know what is being cut for ideological reasons, not just (OTT example) 'Labour forced us to .. er .. scrap the NHS .. because of when they were in power - honest guv - it's not remotely - ahem - because we can't stand the thing and reckon the private sector will do better ..'.

Conventionally, or just outright ability? For defence of the realm, Trident (or it's replacement) and a reasonably sized airforce, groundforce and navy (of some form) is the main thing that's needed.

We have way more than we need to do the things you've said, at least if we weren't playing nicely-nicely.

Well, since the article reads:
A senior Whitehall source said: “These are not Tory cuts, these are Labour cuts as a result of their irresponsible overspending. However, a lot of this comes down to how much political appetite there is to do this.”

Its already been done.

Remember that this will also cut MOD contracts to the UK workforce, resulting in job cuts in the private sector etc. etc.

Way forward imo. It's not a coincidence that some of the best social countries in the world aren't involved in the middle east and also coincidentally, the states and the UK are probably the worse sufferers of the recession.

Is this where I once again say the forces should be completely gutted, followed by several pages of literally every single other OcUK member completely disagreeing with me?

We need to spend the money better... they should be looking at ways of making the forces more effective, etc. before they start cutting funding...

What would you suggest then?

Surely the main way to improve effectiveness is it improve equipment, oh no that's all getting cut

Whats your reasoning behind that?

I really can't be bothered to go into detail, but I will try to simplify my reasoning:

- our global presence exacerbates perceived threats instead of diminishing them
- the chance of a major nation threatening the uk is next to nil
- the US has our back, let them do the job
- we can't bloody afford it you fool

Look at Japan. Instead of taking a leaf from their book, the UK should nick the entire thing.

There has been a lot of wastage under labour, theres been a lot of work contracted out, etc. in ways thats not very cost effective, people pretty much allowed to take the **** paid loads and doing a sub standard job... (talking contractors, management, etc. not soldiers).
