Massive military cuts

I simply do not think the majority of the UK population would ever sign off on the loss of British Soverignty that would entail.

I think you're right, and it's this short sightedness that is hastening our decline.

I can see the benefits for European Integration along the lines (although not setup) of the United States, but I don't think we will see it happen in our lifetimes, the ideological and historical barriers are simply too great.

I think it's already happening, what do you think about Eurocorps? I was quite surprised to read that they've been up and running for some time now, less surprised to find out that the UK isn't involved, which of course means we have no say in shaping the future of the inevitable.

Time to start looking for a new job :(

Cutting the army, navy & Raf great idea NOT!
The Argies are upping there game again also

The likes of Iran, north Korea running around with nukes. Thanks Tories why don't you bend us all over and let us all get ######

The problem with initiatives like the Eurocorp is that Europe generally spend far too much and accomplish far too little.

We do however supply a liason officer to the Eurocorp and it wasn't until
2002 that the Eurocorp gained Full Operational Status under SACEUR. The Contingents supplied by each country are under national jurisdiction during peacetime and as Europe has never declared a war jointly it is difficult to assertain it's effectiveness at present.

I am open-minded on military integration, I have fought within many different multi-national commands including KFOR and ISAF to name a couple, but always as a national force. I am not sure how effective a unified European army could be given the EU penchant for waste and prevarication.

Something else apart from Afghan will happen in the next 20years. What will it be and will we be ready for it?

Or will we sit the next war out?

Would USA really come to our rescue or help us out, something bad would have to happen before it got to that?

What a time to be joining the forces, all the cushy aspects of it might be taken away, like pension ha :)

RM under Army control?....you trying to give me nightmares.

Precisely.:D
The RN and RM are institutions in this country (the latter as you will attest). I would rather see a Frenchman in Number 10 than them belittled.

I am hoping this article is a all a lot of hot air / worst case. If not, I want Labour destroyed - and Dave/George needs a slapping.

Why even have a military is this day and age?? Haven't we progressed enough that problems can be sorted out with diplomacy and words?

The whole idea of the military is obsolete and the money could be much better spent on more humanitarian causes like hunger and disease.

Are you high?

No, if your question is serious. We have not progressed enough. The military is obsolete? /backs away slowly.

Most of it is media hyperbole.

The Royal Marines and the Two Parachute regiments becoming one elite unit!!!...not a chance.

We are an Island, our entire history is based on our Naval prowess, we should never forget that and if anything the Navy and its associated units are what still make our Armed Forces one of the best in the world.

Biased I may be, but bias doesn't mean I'm wrong.

Heard from a friend in the Navy that the Marines are going to join the army!

Very bad news IMO unless they're moved rather than removed.

There'll be many military trained technicians and engineers who aren't qualified for civil aircraft. And many more grunts without many transferable skills looking for jobs.
Lots of English companies like Qinetiq are also suffering the repercussions.

Cuts in defence R&D as a result is terrible news for everyone.

AFAIK it's all rumour. The rumour goes that they want to create a single Elite Force comprising the Royal Marines, Parachute Regiment and the SAS. Some are calling it an Expeditionary Brigade.

The Army want operational control, but want to leave formal control and fiscal responsibility with the Navy. It won't happen. (he says sweating slightly).

The MOD considered something similar a while ago but it amounted to nought. I remember my CO saying it was 'laughable'. I doubt this idea will fly either.
