froyo for desire starts this weekend

i'm on Vodafone and am mad paranoid about this update now. I do have to manually choose to install it don't i? I don't want that crap on my Desire :S

Also, what is the best way of upgrading to Froyo? Some people say Root and then just upgrade, some people say Goldcard method is best?

B@

Id use the unevoked program and then pap a 2.2 rom on :)

Done it a few nighs ago to a makes phone, took no time. His was a vodafone one (not the new update tho) and no goldcard was needed.

I used the r3 method months and months ago... think its called the r6 method now, but unevoked worked perfect and so much simpler :D

I have a O2 branded phone and have tried doing this but I can't get it to work. It goes fine until I try to install the ROM and I get the message looking for bootloader. It checks about 100 times then gives up and tells me to reconnect my phone.

When I did a hard reset I noticed there was an option to go into bootloader so it is there. When the ROM fails I get left with the hard reset screen but no options just the bulid information and some skateboarding Androids.

Can anyone help?

This exactly the issue I am having but I get a bootloader version error.

On a Voda contract with phone from CPW here.

No cacky voda update as yet (thank god) but still no Froyo.

Am happy i have an unlocked phone as when i first got it CPW and voda messed up the set-up and i was using my O2 Simplicity SIM in there for 3 weeks.

Any ideas when this is going to happen? Have tried the 'check for updates' and nothing is there

if you have not got the update yet, i would reckon you are still branded and will get the voda update, you need to stick a basic htc rom on if you want it now

How do you know if you are branded, I have managed to flash my Desire with a ROM, the 02 branding has gone, I get a generic HTC screen and noise but i am still on 2.1.

Not necessarily correct, I have an unlocked and unbranded desire from CPW on orange and am still awaiting the update, I have also contacted HTC but have yet to get a reply

I think HTC have pulled the 2.2 OTA update for now on unbranded handsets. Seems to be what everyone is saying. Not sure why though.

I have noticed significantly better battery life since upgrading, but that could be because I stopped using launcherpro, not sure which it is. :/

Just got the following response to my query regarding the upgrade:

yes if your phone is unbranded and unlocked. it is available for the 2.2 update. but becuase the update is on high demand. they can only send it it ota (over the air) to a group of people at a time. otherwise there sevrers would crash. so at the moment you are in a que. if you keep waiting about 1-2 weeks. you should recieve the update. you also need a strong internet signal when downloading the update to insure it doesnt get corrupt. keep checking for the update like you have been, and good luck hope this helps.

useful to know but not sure about the spelling mistakes.

I haven't recieved the update notice, checking manually gives the upto date message. I have an unlocked/unbranded desire bought from cpw end of march(the orange payg but got away without having to pay the extra for the orange sim, already had orange payg so the guy 'upgraded' me. using the o2 12month £15/month simplicty for smart phones sim in it).

with the previous updates I had to do a manual check as didn't recieve the update available message, tho for some reason I seem to remember getting the message for the 1st update after I'd checked and run the update.

How can you tell me if your desier is unbranded or not? Mine when it starts up has HTC, quietly brilliant logo and no vodafone logos or anything on it? When i search for update for the past 5 days. It states there are no updates available. My phone has firmware version 2.1-update1.
Thanks guys :)

According to some posts on XDA, the 2.2 update has been pulled, not sure why as I don't have any bugs with it.

What does your Build number say in About Phone -> Software version.

Just had a go at using the wifi hotspot facility, had OTA 2.2 for over a week on unbranded Desire on Orange. My laptop connects to the phone perfectly, but there seems to be no internet access, despite the phone having a good 3g signal and being able to browse the internet itself.

Has anyone had this issue?

Also, I can't see how to configure "allowed users only" in the hotspot settings menu...

Anyone?

No problems with wifi hopspot here, roadworks outside cut my landline for a few days last week so it was invaluable. Have you tried the power mode settings/wifi channel?

Oh yeah, the 'allowed users only' option is duff. The notification to allow a connection doesn't work (It just dumps the PC instantly)

whats the difference and/or advantages of using a gold card as opposed to rooting? Which is better (gold card or rooting)?
