The Human Race 'Must Colonise Space Or Face Extinction'

Even at time of adversity the human race will not pull together.

Everyone will be looking out for themselves. China, russia, north korea will all be competing to see who builds a spaceship faster to escape earth.

Actually, this thread has been quite useful from one perspective. I have always held the view that there are too many humans on the planet and that there should be fewer. However, in the context of the World ending and trying to save them, I suddenly feel quite attached to them all. What's wrong with me, and how do I overcome this apparent inner turmoil?

But you don't do you?

You no doubt live in moderate luxury in this country maybe give some to charity but that's it.

You like all those dirty capitalists are unwilling to sacrifice the majority of your luxuries but still enough to be comfortable to save hundreds (if not thousands) of lives abroad.

But don't feel bad about it that's just how we're made.

We live in a Capitalist society. Capitalism is based on the distribution of wealth. Unfortunately Capitalism always leads to something like 95% of the wealth being owned by 5% of the population.

At every opportunity i get i do everything i can to get this 5% to do something to benefit the rest of us. Of course, it never works, because they're the greedy capitalists. Not I. We're in a stupid situation where the upper class is exploiting the entire working class.

Socialism is equally sharing out this wealth throughout the entire population... in which case there is no need for 'wealth' in terms of money but that's for another day.

We aren't 'made'. We aren't pre-programmed to do anything. A human child has to learn how to breath, to move, to eat.

so who is fit to make that decision? i dont even trust the government to do whats right for England, let alone the world?!

Probably whoever has the most money and resources to build the required ships and technology needed for settling another planet. That may be a government, a country, a corporation or even a private individual.

Even at time of adversity the human race will not pull together.

Great nations are born through strife and warfare, not by pulling together with their enemies and having group hugs :-)

The nuclear test ban treaty needs to be amended to allow nuclear bomb research for peaceful means. This would allow nuclear propulsion research to continue. It would be the best technology for launching large spacecraft, larger than anything possible or conceivable with chemical rocket technology.

Not something to be sad about, ants are personally my favourite organisms o n the planet (well maybe ants or termites), they work in excellent harmony, they farm, they build they develop complex ventilation systems, they even have dedicated garbage disposal.

They are awesome little buggers.

It should also be noted that ants are actually the dominant species of the Earth and not humans.

You should check out Polish ants

Of course it's the evil capitalists that force you to buy luxury good ;)

But then why do anything?

If you get the same regardless why work had to become a doctor or the director of a large research division.

May as well just do any job and avoid the stress.

Yes we are, or are you saying being gay is a choice?

Or a million other things.

Doesn't mean it will happen, or that we can not prevent it though.

Sure, no one has a crystal ball... but complex life has been around for some half a billion years, since then some 98% of all species every to exist have become extinct. The planet has another billion or so years of nice environment to offer complex life. The odds of the human species sticking around for that period of time are astronomically small. Big complex creatures do worse than small simple ones over the long term.

Over those half billion years there have been 5 mass extinctions, End Cretaceous, End Triassic, End Permian, Late Devonian, and End Ordovician. Fairly evenly spread out. To suggest something equally as catastrophic won't happen for another billion years when it's happen 5 times in the last half billion years is crazy.

Seriously - the Sun reaching the end of its life is irrelevant for our species.

Of course we are made, by a biological process. We are pre-programmed with a hell of a lot of stuff. Other things can be learnt/unlearnet or down to environmental conditioning(or what ever it is called)

No other species has had the means to defend and protect itself. The longer we have until disasters the more advance technology becomes.

personally i think they should try to find some francis drake DNA, clone 100 of him and just send him onto exploraton with another 100 clones of Marina from 'the diamonds'.

It doesn't it's just you need them to run the space ship/the base/all the equipment.

No point having the worlds greatest artist if he can't perform maintenance on a fuel cell.

basically what you want is a race of drones in space, with human faces, to perform basic maintinence instead of to maintain the spirit of what being human is all about? why not create clones of engineers for that role, again see film: moon, as reference material on this idea! its quite compellign really.

Are we smarter than yeast? Look at climate change for example, that's a potential ELE - many scientists say so, most world leaders agree (including US, China etc...) But are we doing anything to defend ourselves? Nope.

Don't think that an ELE will be as clear as in Deep Impact. These things historically have millennia to unfold (except asteroids). Climate Change is an example of inaction, lack of defence in the face of identified danger. The danger has been (sceptical objections included) identified and agreed by scientists and politicians but we aren't defending ourselves.

Money and religion will probably finish us off as a species way before any asteroids head our way.

Why?

get rid of money and it is replaced with trading.

Religion has always been around and has not destroyed us and I see no reason why it would destroy us.
Again remove religion and other excuses are made. WMD for example.

Yes, yeast does not have a brain, as for other species that's debatable. They don't have opposable thumbs. so can not manipulate stuff.
The chances that climate change is an ELE is as close to zero as you can get. It has the potential to kill billions (although unlikely). But has almost no chance of making us extinct.
