Graduates struggling to find jobs

I thought local authorities were cutting jobs.

Catch 22 as they have no experience but cant get any due to not having a relevant job. I think they will take jobs with less money and with less relevance to their study

I thought of local government because it has a ageing workforce, so i would imagine they would try to inject graduates into there.

Its its going to be really problematic when year by year undergrads graduate and queuing up to scratch on.

tbh this was always gonna happen (and has been happening for years anyway). Basically too many graduates in subjects that dont require a degree, imo

A degree has become like a oyster card. Everyone has one, it has become devalued.

And like mentioned before by others without experience that piece of paper is worth Null. Which is ironic as I thought Graduate placement schemes, were supposed to provide that experience, but it seems the rigorous filtering is in favour with candidates that have previous experience or have taken initiative of doing summer placements or unpaid internships, which I guess is only fair if you want the best person for the job.

No every student will be entering the jobs market with no experience. Many universities with good employment records encourage their students to do an industrial placement year. Plus, some companies advertise summer jobs for students.

I feel sorry for anyone who went to a university outside of the top 30 and has no experience though. It's going to be very tough.

This is why I think sandwich courses are best.

I'm in that situation currently. At the moment I'm applying for any job possible, graduate and otherwise. I have had an internship writing for an entertainment site and now I'm applying for a Financial Times graduate scheme. Hopefully that will get me something.
I haven't had any interviews yet.

Degrees in ~good subjects~ from ~good universities~ haven't been devalued by the fact that there are loads of hair dressing graduates from Nowhere Poly.

Best post so far.

My friend couldn't find work when he graduated. He did media and sociology at a poly uni. Awesome.

Those of you who did a placement: how hard was it for you to find a job after you graduated?
I am currently on placement and have already had an offer for a graduate job. Does that count?:p

Yes I totally agree the Russell Group University will increase your chances of employment highly.

However I don't think labour's plan when it was in power to get everyone to uni was a good one.

I didn't no you could do a hair dressing degree LOL. I was more thinking of degrees such as media studies, criminology etc.(No disrespect to anyone)

Totally agree and to many degrees/Uni which are not respected.
All comes down to government pushing for what is not needed and thus providing a stigma to trades and other jobs.

Bring back the polytechnics.

I'm in limbo. I have two placement offers. But don't know weather to impress the crap out of them and go straight into a graduate scheme after the placement, or to go back to uni and complete the final year masters.
