That, is a damn cool tattoo.

For the space on the back, how about something like a rising sun motif? Pretty cliché but I think fitting with the rest of the design.

ROFl never noticed the sword and the foo lions mouth...god dam Freudian tattoo artist :D
keeping the whole thing Monochrome, will be everso slight brown/red wash here and there.
Nice ideas so far keep them coming, regarding cost i genuinely have no idea so far it taken a year to get this far

I'm not trying to be negative here but what happens to a tattoo like this when your body shape changes?

If you were to loose a lot of weight would it screw up the design? I was thinking about this the other day when a really skinny guy I work with said he was going to get a tattoo on his arm, but he's also starting weight training so if he gains a fair bit of muscle, surely his design would be messed up as well?

In short, if you get a tattoo like this are you forced to stay the same body shape for it to look good?

My random thought aside, it does look cool. Should look great when filled in.

Looking good, how many sittings so far?

Not sure off the top of my head but about 2hrs every 2 weeks (working around work and family) since last Aug

Good question mate, if you loose/gain to much weight yes that tattoo will distort. Depending of the design it could be touched up. However in my case i have been a fat sod for the last 20 years ;) and have never lost/gained more then stone each way so im happy enough.

The Japanese dudes sword kinda looks like a penis.. which kinda looks like its going in the creatures mouth.... :p

Only messing mate nice tattoo! Are you getting it coloured after it's all outlined or leaving it black and grey? Could you not have a traditional Japanese background to fill it?

haha first thing I relooked at, good tattoo but seriously your body is not a canvas.

Who says it's not a canvas? Tattoos are one of the oldest traditions we have as a race.

The onus is on you to say why we shouldn't, not the other way around, we've been decorating our bodies for as long as we've been around.

Says who?

Me, you can throw a canvas away, you cant exactly throw your skin away.

Looks amazing but thats about it, anybody can do it, whats the story behind it, did he get it in China or serve time in China?

I hate it when people go "well I liked it" it offers no inspiration.

I love stories of forces blokes with tattoo or tribes men.

Lets get back on topic, :p

why does a tattoo need to mean something or have some deep meaning?

Because its lasting, forever, its not one you get in a packet of gum that comes off after 2 days, its a modification of the body, I put that high up in the "meaning something" category.

:) Well I disagree if he wants a tattoo of a turd on his forehead for example thats entirely up to him, its his body he can do whatever he wants with it, regardless of anyone else's opinion.

So? it can be a work of art, something you enjoy to look at. People think for years about getting tattoo's done, so it's not like he's rushed in completely out of the blue to get something he will regret like people on holiday getting those tattoo's which a chimp could carve into your skin.

Not disputing that but at least add a story to a tattoo, you dont wake up one day and go I am having a tattoo of epic Chinese piece of art or do you?

I am tattoo free so maybe I am different!
