Ramadan in the work place .

My rule is never employ more than a couple of muslims, they may work hard but their holidays are a bitch.

Thank god i dont work for you because i would tell u in no uncertain terms to **** the hell off...2 holidays a year we have as muslims and you say they are a bitch??...shows how much you know:rolleyes:

Racial and religious hatred aside, employer can legally refuse the request.

Religion or belief discrimination

If you want time off for religious holidays, ask well in advance. Your employer should consider your request sympathetically but they can refuse if it will affect the business.

Obivously you'll probably want to negotiate to try and get the best solution for everyone, but ultimately if it's going to cause scheduling problems and leave you short staffed, you can say no.

Wow.. a lot of invalids in this thread. The guy is requesting leave, what's the big deal? Let him take his leave.

Not really, other people have booked leave for that time and this guy's shifts have been arranged so he can cover the defecit in staff. Letting him have his leave would severely impact the staffing levels, surely? A purely secular response says 'no', frankly.

Guys ,

Having had to speak to the company solicotors to check what the legal posistion is before i said anything to this guy I can confirm there is no Legal postion .

He understands that he is required to work due to operational requirements and will be a key member of staff for the last two weeks of August , I have however allowed him to come in later on at around 21:30 when we are fully staffed around these two weeks to enable him to break his fast and prey .

I have during the two weeks he will be in the office made provision for him to take a break to eat and prey if he wants to as well , a little compramise I suppose works well for all involved.

I cant let him have it his own way as I may find that I suddenly have a plethora of Jedi Knights that need the whole of December of .

Speaking as a non Muslim who knows a few Muslim people and went to school with some, it never used to affect them from the ages of 13-17 waking up early to eat, then going to school every day for 8-9 hours and coming home and waiting to eat in the evening.

I'm sure there isn't a specific need to have the time off, unless he wants it for a day or two at the start for specific reasons or family or something?

I'd left out the "or don't" :)

My point being, what the hell has this member of staff's intentions got to do with it? He is asking for time off, it should be treated irrespective of his activities during said time.

Its a bizzare concept to me. We used to have an Asian lad who worked on out helpdesk who would fall asleep at his desk midday as he hadn't eaten anything.

My understanding is you cannot eat during sunlight so he would get up early and stuff himself silly, then do the same last thing at night. It cant be good for your body tbh.

Sounds fair enough to me...he shouldnt have any cause for complaint as you have compromised some what for him.

Of course it isn't. Part of the point of power-orientated religions is to exert power over the followers on as deep a level as possible. That's why food and sex are such common areas for control. Having such a degree of control that followers will self-harm purely out of obedience...well, that's the ultimate win.

As i work part time (Weekends Only) I've got time off for Ramadan. But of course i booked these off last year around about end of September. And i do the same thing every year. More then enough notice? Infact dont go back in work till first weekend of Oct :D extra time off if you know how to play the system ;)

Where i work there are loads of Asians/muslim people work. Most of them have be denied for time off. No special treatment for anyone.

But one thing is for sure when Eid comes. The whole place will be empty as most of them will just ring in sick. And the company knows that very well.
As they have already prepaid bringin in temp people to cover.

It's a good way to get diabetes. Massive blood sugar spike in the morning and evening.

Not to turn this into a religious debate but would like to clarify some points.

It's a good way to get diabetes. Massive blood sugar spike in the morning and evening.

The Quran states that God does not burden any soul more than it can handle (i.e. we are tested during our life with loss of life, wealth & health). God has prescribed fasting as a way of cleansing the the physical body and the soul. So he knows our physical makeup best. So if says a human can fast from dawn till dusk and he has asked every Muslim to fast then we must carry out this task. I have fasted since I was 10 and I have been sensible in both the quantity and quality of foods I eat and I have never been diagnosed diabetic.

On that note, what would a diabetic do if they had to fast?

I know I wouldn't be able to go from morning till light without food , hypo galore!

Again Islam has provisions for this. My aunt ws diabetic and required insulin and tablets at certain points in the day. Therefore she was allowed to skip fasting but had to pay a small sum of money ~£90 for the month so that someone poor can fast on her behalf.

and next time check for silly religous beliefs before employing someone...

I never understand the point of not eating during the day.. whats the point of that... its not fasting... it pointless..

Mate you are entitled to your opinion and I respect it but I would encourage you to read into the reasons behind fasting before forming your opinion. There is more to fasting than just doing without food - but as I said if you have time do a little reading.

As for the OP - If your employee has not informed you well in advance (as I did with my employer) then its his tough. But its up to you how kind you are if you want to help him out but it is not a requirement on your part.
