Hey all

I'm a diehard windows user, but today I have come over to the dark side...I do hope there are some cookies left for me :)

I took the plunge and got a macbook pro 13" 2.66GHz, 320gb HDD 4GB DDR3 RAM. It will be like a netbook for me until I can figure out this Snow Leopard lark. I must say its the best quality laptop I have ever used, this thing oozes quality out of every orifice. Its so shiny *swoons and ignores the large hole blasted in his bank balance*.

I'm loving Snow Leopard so far, I'm a bit confused by some things (like why when I use utorrent or MSN messenger a mounting icon appears and remains on the desktop).

I have a lot of learning to do...which I am actually looking forward too! Anyone have any essential tips for a first time mac user?

To install applications.

1) Mount the image (think of it like an ISO)
2) Open the image, double click the icon on the desktop
3) Drag and drop the application icon into the applications folder
4) Right click, the image on the desktop and unmount

Now you can just launch the application from the applications folder.

Thanks guys both sets of tips were very useful. I have now managed to properly install MSN, Plex, VLC, uTorrent, stuffit expander and a temperature monitor.

How do I use stuffit expander? I'm using it on a 8GB .mkv file and it keeps coming up with errors. Is it like winzip or are there more steps involved?

I sorted it now, I was being retarded and didn't see right at the bottom there is an icon you click and it does its thing for you...no effort required.

I jumped and bought a MBP 13" about a week ago. Loving it. It's a refurb though.

Question. Can you buy Apple Care cover after you've bought the MBP? I'm not worried about it being a refurb. I'm worried about IF something (anything) goes wrong. I don't fancy footing huge bills to fix faults, or having it **** out on me after the standard warranty has lapsed.

Yes. :)

I'm loving my new macbook except for one thing.

When the magnetic charger is plugged in, i can feel a vibrating kind of static charge build up on the aluminium frame of the laptop. Its very irritating. I have read around and this seems like a common issue with Macbook pro's.

Anyone have any tips on how to stop this? If I can't stop it ill be forced to take my MBP back to the store as it really is a deal breaker for me.

EDIT: this doesn't happen when its running on battery

Check your earthing of your socket.

I sometimes get the same depending on the socket/extension it's plugged in..

How would I check my earthing? I think I may have "dirty electricity" in my house because on my windows PC I can hear static through my headphones.

I have used the extension plug (there are 2 plugs in the box, ones shiny and the other is a normal looking one, apparently the latter is earthed) and so far no static.

Pleased to hear it - this kind of thing can happen with any device Apple or no. I used to have a similar thing when I charged my now very old Motorolla v7 or whatever it was called. I also notice this feeling when I plug in my iPhone at work to charge, but it doesn't happen at home so I think its a power supply issue too.

Check the adapter. If you're using the head that goes straight onto the power pack that'll be why. If you have a look inside the head it has no earth connection. Using the wired head will negate this affect as it has a earth.

Thanks guys. Its definitely the small plug head thats the issue. Using the cord has stopped the static. Looks like I'll be keeping my macbook after all!

Now onto some more noob questions. I've been reading about deleting applications. I know your supposed to drag the icon out of the applications folder into the trash and delete, but some places are saying there are some apps like "clean my mac" are better at deleting apps. Is this true? I thought the mac os didnt install apps or have any kind of directory like windows does.

I would recommend apptrap (http://onnati.net/apptrap/) which is very good at running in the background. Apps you have installed generally use .plist files which store the preference information for the app and generally isn't removed with the app. Apptrap allows you to still drag and drop apps into the bin, and then it pops up and asks if you want to remove the associated files with it, click yes and it removes everything. Sometimes you want to keep the plist files when you are upgrading a program, in which case click no ;)

I'm sure someone whose more of a machead than me will tell you what i've forgotten to say, I'm just a 1 year machead not a lifer ;)

Thanks for that Delphi.

I'm a bit disappointed that apps like this even have a market on OSX. I expected the Mac OS to sort all that out automatically. Everyone I know raves about how you don't need to do any maintenance on a mac...this seems like maintenance to me.
