Obama defends ground zero mosque plans

You mean like some sort of community/cultural centre type building?

A community centre might be one answer, assuming the whole community used it and it wasn't felt to be the preserve of a particular element.

Some sort of community assistance programme might be another answer, keeping the streets clean, helping the homeless or disabled. That sort of thing.

There's probably loads of different options, but anything that brings people together, emphasising what they have in common, rather than highlighting differences has to be a good thing, n'est pas?

History dictates that some people are good some are bad and some just do what they have to.

Religion is merely justification.

Exactly, people aren't fighting in Israel because they're Jewish or Islamic, they're fighting over land and an invader/indigenous people complex is clearly there.

You mean like what the majority of this building is going to be?

the mosque is only one part of it.

perhaps you should have read the articles ;)

Build a garden plaza with a Church, Synagogue and a Mosque given equal billing. Hopefully people from different backgrounds and religions will integrate a little better.

Or simply build a free hospital/homeless shelter on the site.

The last president of the United states of America said he declared war because God (who he's on a first name basis with ) told him to...

He also justified the invasion of Iraq by declaring "...I am going to get the man who tried to kill my Daddy."

I think it's commonly accepted that George Bush is a clown shoes.

It's private land, so if you can get the funding and planning permission for either go for it.

otherwise it would be a terrible precedent to set about government meddling in any land sale involving a potential religious use.

Absolutely.

What are the landowners intentions, does anyone know?

But considering the proposed Mosque is a couple of streets away the media outrage seems somewhat sensationalist to be honest.

Staunchly "western" secular/christian America gets attacked by islamic terrorists, have two wars in foreign countries where the inhabitants allude it to a holy war (ji'had).

Then they elect a president called "Hussain Obama" whose history or religious preference isn't really known, and now are electing to build a mosque near ground zero.

They do surprise me :p

Not exactly "On Ground Zero". And tbh, I wouldnt care if it was. Go for it imho.

Religious groups are amazingly wealthy.

Not just through donations but land and money they've invested over hundreds of years.

If it was the church I would agree, but a middle eastern religion which hasn't been prevelant til recently? It would be interesting to see the money trail, not that I think its terrorist related, just curious.

a)Christianity is middle eastern

b) not prevalent? it pretty much runs several countries.

c) those countries happen to be very very wealthy.

no one is 'forcing' anything though - they are building somewhere which if it interests you then you can go and visit it. Where is the actual harm coming from, apart from offending a few ignorant people?

If you have ever been there you would know the New Yorkers are very tolerant people.
But 60% do not want this built so it's not(as you say) a few people.
