I noticed a lot of people said it was make or break for PhysX on Mafia II as it was currently dead technology..

What was your impressions?

Yeah it's crap and not even proper physx, it's glorified eye candy with a stupid performance hit, the game its self is fun but being DX9 only it's GFX design is more console oriented and that sucks. It's ludicrous that a 480 can't run a DX9 game at 60 fps average because of some lame so called physx effects, just disable them IMO and run the game at 150+ fps lol.

The effects can easily be done on the CPU or one GPU if properly implemented and optimized to do so.

Because Nivida want to make you go out and buy their hardware to run physx, what would be the incentive to buy nvidia for physx if it ran good on the CPU, ffs it does not even run good on the GPU, just a scam and the quicker GPU physx dies the better. And yeah not many developers are using hardware physx, just the ones Nvidia throw cash at. The ones that are not corrupt do use physics on the CPU, just like justcause 2 does.

I don't have the game yet. but my friend told me that it was awful performance with physx and didn't seem much better anyway. Another friend, who has a 5850 said that his performance was pretty good on full settings.

Is it really only a DX9 game ?
Or was that the version they released for the demo ?
In one of the directories, it looks like there are shader optimisers, but i do not think they enabled them for the demo.... just pegged it at certain level to keep demo fairly small.

I'd have to agree with the physics affects they look like a dumbed down version rather than true fluid real world physics which surely must be the goal, in some cases it does look good. However as most people are stating the performance loss from such effects is way too big.

I think nvidia will keep on pushing it as they have invested allot of money in it. I think physx will be with us for a good few years. The ideal situation would be for an open source physx platform to be the standard and market leader as this would slowly kill off nvidias physx.

I think PhysX is good but the game would have to be developed over say 5 years for them to get it right which isn't really an option for devs and publishers looking for max profit

I only played the demo on 360, it also gets hit pretty hard as well....nothing that havok can't do put it like that....

something which console gamers wouldn't notice through

Mafia 2 looks awful compared to the horsepower it needs.

I'm replaying Batman AA at the moment, it looks far better than mafia 2 and runs like the brown stuff of a stick with full physx

They should make a racing game with Physx from the ground up and make the crashes and body deformation the best ever, too show use what it really could do and also the actual simulation of driving.
