My Grandad uses MSN, and he is 80 soon...

My nan is 85 uses facebook and Skype, her PC recently broke so my uncle got her a laptop she is loving it even more now haha.

My grandad's just turned 86. He's got facebook (and uses it!), MSN, uses email and he was asking about spotify on my PC so I bought him a subscription for his birthday a few weeks back. He's made up with it, can get all the music from his heyday on it.

Credit where credit's due I say. I don't know anyone else as old as him who is that adept with a PC. Hell, my Mum still can't grasp typing with more than her index finger on her right hand.

I thought my grandma was doing good using msn and email and I was impressed when she started using iplayer after I only showed her once :D

My step-dad is 71 and is IT-proficient. He is one of those Photoshoppers who knows that PSD/PNG is better than a JPG :-) Does plenty of video-Skype, knows how to frequently back up data, and the fact that NOD32 > Norton :-)

A couple of years ago, in preperation for a planned family purchase of a pc or maybe iMac for my gran, I gave her a brief introduction to the type of things she could do online (that would be of interest to her), despite multiple falling asleeps while I was showing her she did get really interested and started doing stuff on her own for a bit. They never got round to getting her a computer, real shame as I know she'd like to be able to keep up with all the grandchildren on facebook, even if she gets put on a limited profile by most. She's 97 this year.

Why is it so astonishing for an older person to use something like this?

It's not as if they're suddenly incapable of doing any thing. :\

It depends on when they started using them as to whether it's surprising or not, for anyone over about 30 who has never used a PC in their lives it's a big jump, getting bigger the older they are. It's not that they're not capable of doing things, just that it's a big new skillset to learn.

Obviously there's a big difference between these people and people who've used computers since they were invented and just happen to be old

My nan in law has her own laptop that she uses everyday. It's all new to her though and her friend told her that all emails were viruses to she wouldn't dare open anything we sent :p She is now moving on to touch screens!

My two other nans (both 70) use Facebook (the shame!). One of them can do anything on the computer as she used to teach Word, Excel, etc to foreigners at her school :)
