Hello guys, I need a bit of help.

I recently purchased a p45 chipset motherboard (Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3LR) to go with my GTX280 but for some weird reason the 280 doesnt work on it,
I've tried everything to get it to work i.e re-seating it, changing psu etc, the 280 works on an older motherboard though.

So i've had enough with all that messing about.

At the minute I'm running an old 7950gt and after looking around for a decent motherboard I'm kinda thinking about just buying a new (lower end)
graphics card instead and then using the 280gtx later this year when i upgrade to an i5 or better.

Trouble is which graphics card to get? Looking to spend around £100

Wanna use this card for gaming @1680x1050 and also want to link it to my tv for HD movies so was thinking of getting a lower end ATI Card.

Which is better for what i need?

5850

or older 4890

Any help would be much appreciated

cheers

The 4890 is a lot faster than the 5750, and faster than a 5770 - the only drawback being that it doesn't support DX11 (well they run hot and use more power too). If you are looking for DX11 support then i would recommend saving an extra £50 for a GTX460 768mb, you will get a substantial jump in performance for the extra cash.

If you're not too worried about DX11 then the 4890 is a good buy though.

Cheers Nocky,

Not bad for just a few quid more, but will that 4890 gimme me better framerates over the 5770?

I only really play steam games but looking to purchase startcraft 2 and a couple other games.

cheers

If that's the case I'd definitely go for the 4890 mate. Its great in source games and starcraft 2 should run admirably :)

The GTX 280 and GTX 460 are very equal in performance, maybe an extra 5% from the 460.

4890 is better then the 5770 but no DX11, so that's for you to decide if you want it or not.

Selling the GTX 280 and buying a GTX 460 1GB then overclock it would be what I would do if it was my card.

Cheers Guys I appreciate your time.

Looking at the 1 yr warranty on the 4890 is kinda putting me off but i do accept that its old tech now so i can't ask for much more.

Looking to upgrade in a few months so i don't really wanna spend much more then £120. I think i'll keep the 280 and go for either the 4890 or the 5770.

Wish there were more decent motherboards around, as i wouldn't of come unstuck.

Again thanks for the help ;)
