Map Showing World's Undersea Cables

Cool, Interesting that compared to the ones in the northern Atlantic, those is the mid Pacific all have much higher data rates.

England seems to be doing quite well, more entering it than France and Germany together!

very interesting indeed.

what i dont understand is how do they lay/bury the cable when right out in the middle of the atlantic? I mean how deep is it and how do they safely bury it while so far out at sea?!

Under water scanning? Ultrasonics I guess? Pretty sure I remember reading that when they do have problems it's literally a case of fishing them back out of the water.

They're not buried, just laid on the sea-bed.

Very interesting map, I've always been curious about these.

I think portcuarno was the site of the first telegraph cable across the atlantic, saw it on james mays 20th century i think. Might be a different spot though but it's somewhere down there.

Considering your ISP made use of one of those cables, if you took all the data you have downloaded in your entire life: howmany seconds would it take for all that data to pass through one of the 3.2tbs cables connecting UK to America?

For me i think it would take 1.3 seconds.

Watch the Tyco Resolute episode from Mighty Ships it's pretty amazing stuff. IIRC, basically they drag a sled/"plough"(big machine) across the sea bed and it buries the cable - all your questions will be answered if you watch the episode I mentioned.

will look into it, but I dont think linking to a torrent site is going to go down well with the dons, I guess I mean how they they cope with the changes in the sea bed, it isnt just flat from here to the US surely?

That's fancy and all that, but they clearly do not have enough cables yet, or i wouldn't be getting 250kbs on a good day.
