It's not 100% that the nail was the cause yet, someone rightly stated, why didn't the ambulances/fire engines have punctures too?

The law of probability most likely, unless the guy had real paitence and coated the entire road in a bed of nails, then there's more than likely just going to be numerous spots where the nails are. And hence the chance of driving on one is low.

I don't agree with street racing, but I also don't agree with this:

Hmm first R.I.P to all involved street racing is bad but somone else putting something like that in the road is bad.

HOWEVER - looking at the Plasterboard plug which seems to be held to the road with expanding foam it looks like its placed withing 4 - 6 inch from the wall on the footpath because i'm not sure the surface its mounted on looks like the road.

It is the road, and its not expanding foam, it's too shiny, it looks like silicone or even no more nails?

It does look very close to the kerb though.

Edit: Just seen the pic of the road, the surface it's on is completely wrong as it's a black tarmac, looks more like it's on the footpath/central res area.

Oh lordy...

Bit of a oner for all involved, sad that a chaps lost his life and others are badly hurt.

Shocker for me is where it happened:
http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=51.508823,0.042057&spn=0.0207,0.066047&t=h&z=15

I was there on Sunday about 1930 onwards and did a run on the bike around those roads, purely as an exploration jaunt as they are very empty.

Hiting one of those cavity board screws on the bike...could have been a bit grim.

I had absoultely no idea this sort of stuff (Street Racing) went on in London.

The thought of people trying to justify it with the "Well, if he was going to speed limit he'd be okay" excuse physically makes me sick. Absolutely horrible thing to do/

Hopefully the "BRAKE!" and "Speed Kills" muppets aren't going to get involved on this one.

The person who placed those screws down will have hopefully bragged to a number of people that he was going or did do it, and hopefully one of those people is now very much having to weigh up their conscience on whether or not to shop him.

Looks like no more nails to me.

The ironic thing is that the nail increases the chance of the death of an innocent :(.

However I have no sympathy for the person that was killed. He was happy to risk other people's lives by driving like a bumhole. Thankfully he ended himself rather than a mother and baby.

R.I.P

Hope karma prevails on the low life who is sticking those nails to the road there obvisouly wanting people to die , not just get punctures.

Police caught 2 people in a van, not far from me , covering roundabouts with diesel and other fluids  and to think i like to get me knee down on them said roundabouts :D

And to think I was stunned enough when someone tried to send me through their tailgate when I tried to overtake them on an NSL B-road.

That's just taking it to a whole new level....

I'll bet the screws/nail is a red herring and his 'mates' are trying to cover themselves so they don't get prosecuted.

Possibly. What I dont get is that on PF, they say the road was littered with screws. if so, why did they only take a photo of one, and not the rest that were littered around?

You obviously haven't been down the road in question, have you? An arrow straight road that is deserted at the best of times, let alone on a weekend at night - Very few people's lives were in "danger" that did not willingly put themselves in such a situation.

Plus the fact that it is looking that the accident was either caused by the malice intentions of a member of the public, or by brake failure, not actually speeding and/or street racing...

Defintely not, no.

Very few people's lives were in "danger"

I'd prefer none.

Hmm ok if we're speculating, I'll suggest that it was caused by street racing, because if they'd been obeying the speed limit, a blowout or brake failure probably wouldn't have killed an occupant.

If what you are saying is true then I'm really struggling to pin the motives of the person who did it. If it was on a residential stretch, then it is possible to understand someone getting fed up and trying to take matters to there own hands (even though the nails idea is still incredibly stupid). However an infrequently used dual-carriage with some street racing at night can't really be troubling many people can it. It could possibly be other racers who perhaps have a grudge / falling out? etc As it's suspicious enough as it is someone parking up on a dual-carriageway and thumbling about in the road sticking stuff down.
