I have listed a brand new X-box 360 on ebay and someone has won the auction who has no feedback and is new to ebay.

He has already paid and send me an email saying the following
-----------------
hi just paid by paypal. when can i expect it to arrive? please do not include any receipt as it is a bday present for my son

regards
-----------------

Does this seem a little shady?

This is the item

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290464728565&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:GB:1123

I am new to ebay with 0 feedback and just bought an item and sent a similar e-mail to the seller of the item that I bought; albeit rather better written and more formal with no mention of it being a gift.

So from that perspective I wouldn't automatically decide that it was dodgy.

Yup, you do get new people on eBay you know and his reason sounds reasonably legit. He's just bought a sealed console and doesn't want any receipt etc in the box, presumably so he can simply wrap the box and it's ready to give.

Just send it by a method that requires a signature on delivery to cover yourself. Oh, and also write down the serial code of the console before you send it, if possible.

Thanks, only I have been stung in the past by people with 0 feedback so I am wary.

I'll write down the serial number of the console and send special delivery

Is there anything else I should do before posting?

As long as he paid by paypal and you send by fully traceable courier or Special Delivery then you're fine, I wouldn't send it Standard Parcels!

Send it after you transfer funds from paypal to your bank. Send it via courier also, even if it costs you £10. and take pictures with your name, address, date, serial number all against the xbox and accessories. just to be on the safeside.

All sounds fine though, but being extra prepared does no harm.

oh and also take a picture with the seal in clear view (with name, date, and who you sold it too) just incase he says its DOA.

Would RM special be enough? I will get pics of the seals with my name address date etc

edit - Everything should be cool - have just sent him this message

Hi gbuc8394,
Contratulations on winning the Xbox.
I will not include a receipt and will send it after 2 working days as specified in the listing - so tuesday.
I have transferred funds to my bank account and this should also be with me by tuesday.
As you are a new ebay member I am naturally wary as I have been stung a couple of times before.
I will write down the serial number of the xbox and take pictures of all un-broken seals next to myself and with my details included in pictures.
It will be sent via special delivery on Tuesday
Regards
Alex

shocked so many people think it's completely legit.

you sure? if say the buyer decides to take it apart to experiment, then breaks it and then says it was sent broken, surely op loses?

I don't see how anyone doesn't think it's legit. If you take pictures and so on, send it properly, you'll be fine. Especially if it's brand new and presumably sealed?

What's shady about it? 0 feedback? We all had 0 feedback at some point.

Correct. That is the risk any person/shop selling over distances have.

But why would the buyer do that on purpose? Just wasting their own time.

Makes no sense.

That's a terrible message to send. Especially the line about transferring your money to your bank account. Sounds like you're about to scam the buyer. I bet if the buyer opens it and its genuinely broken, you'd never believe it.

Highly unlikely that anyone would part with so much money to buy something and then decide to take it pieces.

It's an Xbox, you plug it into the TV and play games on it, end off story.
If it turns out that as a brand new console it doesn't work, although the OP has a 'no returns' policy, the buyer would be able to return it to him. In which case, the OP would have to return it to where he bought it from, or make a claim against courier if it was damaged during delivery.

Most likely, the transaction will go ahead fine. Just because somebody has never used eBay before, doesn't mean it's dodgy, it's just somebody who has found your item through something like google and wants to buy it!

Too many people, like yourself, seem to be paranoid for no good reason

you wanna try and find out if it was a credit card transaction, if so and it was stolen credit card paypal will rip the money from your account with no warning, and this can be upto at least 3 months after the sale, you are much better if it was a paypal balance payment, not sure how you check this

this has happened to me on £150 transaction, three months after the item was sent.

has paypal put a hold on the money? they usually do that if your not a prolific seller of such equipment, it's one of the downsides to selling there,

having said that, it almost reminds me of my first purchase on the bay, bought it, paid instantly, never had any problems since then
also, you should be able to make sure if the paypal he paid with is using a verified address,

We all had 0 feedback once. Just make sure you have proof that it was sealed and send it by recorded/signed for delivery.

It might not be a birthday, does the delivery address look like a mail forwarding company?

Sometimes people buy things to get shipped overseas when they can't buy them in their own country.

If I was the buyer I'd be a bit annoyed I was paying for special delivery and yet it wouldn't be arriving for almost a week. If you had different rules for bidders with under a certain amount of feedback you should have stated that in the auction.
