50meg bb? should i get excited?

You need a wireless 'N' router and adapter. 'G' stuff will only give you around 24mb/s. I'm getting an 'N' router and adapter free, as does everyone who gets the XXL package from VM.

yeah this is the new router we'll be getting. though i dont think my laptop will handle it =s, desktop should be fine.

I've had mine for a week now, but they never installed a phone point but still transferred my BT number leaving me without a phone. I called them earlier but I'm not going to hold my breath for them to fix it any time soon.

Make sure you don't let them install the wrong modem! Don't let the engineer leave without verifying you're getting 50Mbit.

internet got installed today,
virgin media guy said he cant seem to get a result of more than 23mbs, so there going to send a new technician out because apparently there should be an absolute minimum of 38mbs coming through. I've ran a few tests and am picking up anything between 0.5 - 17mbs.... the consistency is appalling!

Could be a dodgy modem or signal strength. I wouldn't worry, VM tend to be great decent at resolving speed issues.

One thing that I'm experiencing is WAN>LAN translation.

My new WRT610N, after a few hours, forces the connection to be no faster than 10Mbit (and I can't figure out the cause, yet). I ran tests when my PC was connected to the modem directly and it was at 54Mbps all the time, no problems.

I'm curious to know if that engineer wasn't testing your connection speed with a router involved.

Had 50MB installed today, max I've seen is 17MB despite ringing in advance to triple check I could actually receive 50MB or near enough and they said yes, your area should receive the full speed.

Another technician should be out to me by 4pm apparently, either with a new modem or to trouble shoot some more. They also forgot my wireless N adapter and just bought the router - not massively pleased!

Dont bother with their call centre. They have 2nd line technicians online (used to be on a newsgroup, but now on a website forum). They are very good at diagnosing and arranging to have problems fixed.

I made about 7 phone calls to their call centre, with the most me getting out of them was that there were "no reported faults in my area" and that I should reboot my modem, router, computer. I sent one message to their newsgroup, and they diagnosed a fault in the equipment Im connected to, and fixed by an engineer 2 days later.

I should say, ive never had to contact them via the new forum. I used the internet newsgroups, and they were always manned by 2nd line staff who knew what they were talking about. I'm assuming when they moved the support to an online forum, they retained the same staff.

my brother recorded a speed of 54mbs which is great! i downloaded 2 movies last night in under 20 mins =D

just being a bit temperamental at the minute

not bad

downloading 50 threads from giganews's european server.. I normally top out around the 61 Mb/s mark

number wise it will be ok. Usage wise it probably wont be much different to the way it is just now. Pulling websites etc has very little to do with my connection speed. It's more to do with the sites hosting infrastructure.

I frequently only get 35mb/s on speedtest.net, but if i download from newsgroups I get close to 49mb/s. So I wouldn't rely on speedtest.net for an accurate speed.

I think you mean 6.1 MB/sec. It's impossible to get 61Mbps from a 50 meg cable line; it's hard capped at 53Mbps (so just over 50 megs after overheads).

Thats brilliant, I wonder how 100mb line will look on your line when they roll it out.

Around 100Mbps, same as everyone else's. Cable isn't ADSL and isn't dependent on phone line quality or distance to the exchange. :)
