Would you like all your games on Steam?

The people who are complaining about the prices you do realise you can buy the game at retail price and register the cd-key on steam?

Doesn't always work that way though. There are quite a few games out on steam but they use a different key format to retail store keys

I would prefer all my games not to be on steam, imagine losing your steam account.

Bye bye to every video game you own. Not nice.

Even worse are games nowadays where you still have to use Steam if you buy a retail copy. Im really considering not paying for those anymore and obtaining them through the way that they are supposedly trying to prevent.

Biggest shock ever - Civ 5 wil require steam to run. Great news, Civ 5 has an awesome modding community. I think I'm gonna cancel my preorder and wait until the game can be played without Steam before considering paying for it.

I couldnt care in the slightest what other people think about steam. I dont want to use it at all. I have bought lots of games on Steam, and there is nothing about the Steam program thingy itself that I like at all. It is unwelcome and unwanted Malware on my PC that needs to be destroyed, but then I cant play the games.

What things do you want to see from Steam?

The option to turn Steam off entirely, to have it stop constantly trying to connect to the web when I switch my PC on or lose connection, and to be able to play any game that I may have bought through Steam without having to run its malware.

Do you work for steam? Everytime I see these kinds of threads on forums, it really convinces me that the OP is a viral Steam employee, just like the evil Steam malware on my PC.

Lol @ the baseless anti-steam rant. Half of this forum could tell you to simply run Steam in offline mode and you never have to connect to the internet again once its confirmed you own the game. And that 99.99% of the time, losing your steam account is YOUR fault, and unless you are incredibly lazy you can always get it back.

But then there is probably something wrong with you, otherwise you wouldn't be calling Steam malware...

For me Steam all day every day.

Can't be faffed having CD's here there and everywhere. Having two kids there is a very good chance that the disk will get scratched, stood on, drew on or caked in baby food the minute I am not looking.

It works flawlessly for me. Can't say I have noticed too much of an overhead on resources when it's running in the background.

The point about pricing is valid but at the same time I have probably spent more on games with steam than I would do if it was media only. The complete fall out collection was £15.00 iirc. I guess you have to time your deals right

I have a pretty large catalogue of games waiting to be played.

The other thing I love is that on a lot of pre purchases it's just there at launch. I am prepared to pay a little extra and ensure I can play straight away. Been burnt too many times from some of the online boys who ship within 3-5 days of launch. Your only other option is to pay premium Special Delivery which puts the prices near what Steam would be anyway

No I do not work for steam, I agree there should be a option not to use it for people who do not like it or don't have the spec to run it in the background but no offense anyone who gets their account hacked/stolen shouldn't really be on the internet as they obviously are too gullible and download everything in sight and I see having all your games on a single account a good thing.

I have a steam account with a few games on it but i still go out and buy normal games.

Digital download is the way forward but as someone pointed out, just imagine having hundreds or even thousands of pounds worth of games attached to your steam account and then you lose it somehow (hacked maybe?).

They announced all your games will go DRM free.

No they have not. My understanding is that this originally came from a mis-quote from Gabe Newell in the early days of Steam. I understand the comment was along the lines of "Maybe we could look at removing the DRM" and even then, I believe he was only refering to Valves OWN titles as this was around the HL2 release and also before thirdy party titles were so prominent on the Steam store with content from bigger publishers. EVEN THEN, if they did go into administration, I am sure there are laws preventing you from giving away assets and I am certain that removing DRM from your back catalogue would be considered giving away assets? (Not sure though).

Also, unless they have had this in their contracts with the publishers from day one, I doubt this would happen for ALL games, I am doubtfull it would happen at all.

Third party games are not Valves property and as such, it is not their decision to distribute someone elses games without any DRM.

Even if you removed the Steam wrapper from the games, it would either mean the game is completely DRM free in which case it would be plastered over warez sites, OR the game simply wont run as I suspect games with third party DRM's, have been programmed to Support the Steam DRM alongside and as such may go haywire without it. Valve do not have the rights to change the source code for these games (Well, they just wont have it), that is down to the publisher in which case, removing the Steam DRM may just make the game unusable, especially Steamworks titles.

The bottom line is, Steam has become such a MASSIVE entity, if it did encounter cash flow problems, they would be able to secure finances to keep it afloat, at the VERY WORST, they would be purchased by someone else.

Electronic Arts and Activision are just two companies who I think would love to get their hands on the Steam platform for a cut price :)

Personally, I would rather Gabe burnt the company to the ground before selling though, it is his baby and as such, I dont personallly think he would sell.

If the contracts with the third parties allow, they could perhaps scale down the business MASSIVELY as in remove the Steam store and sell no more third party games and ask for a nominal monthly subscription from users to allow access to their games library using the Steam client. Out of all the crazy speculation, I think this would be more likely than removing the DRM and even then, it is still EXTREMELY unlikely.

or don't have the spec to run it in the background

ROFL

Yes, on a Texas Speak and Spell maybe.

If anyone on this forum has even suggested such a thing in recent years, they need to hand in their PC at the door and GET OUT :)

If the Steam client is affecting your gaming experience, you have MANY MANY other things to worry about.

I already know that steam can be played in offline mode, thanks for your baseless reply. Yet I still have it constantly popping up trying to connect to the internet everytime I am offline, and when connected I keep on getting adverts in the bottom right of my screen. That = Malware.

My PC tells me that Steam is malware, and so does the definition of malware:

Malware - The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.

And that 99.99% of the time, losing your steam account is YOUR fault

I surely would hate to be in that 0.01%.

i will never buy a retail game from a shop ever again.

Neither will I. I much prefer ordering them online and having the boxed copy posted through my mail box :)

BLAH BLAH BLAH... MALWARE.... CRY CRY CRY, BLAH BLAH

I find it EXTREMELY difficult to take your reply seriously when you rant on about Steam being "Malware" which is why I have replied in equally "serious" manner.

Go and install Security Tool or Anti Virus 2010 if you want to see what real malware is.

Steam - Malware?

You crazy guy.

I keep on getting adverts in the bottom right of my screen. That = Malware.

You do realise these adverts can be turned off from within the Steam client?

Yes, all Malware I have ever came across allows me to turn off the adverts

Its definately Adware, which is a form of Malware.

Adware you can turn off the adverts with?

Someone ring Gabe, tell him we have found the flaw to his evil plan.

My PC tells me that Steam is malware, and so does the definition of malware

Your PC tells you Steam is Malware - ROFL

I would be more worried about the intelligence of your "security" software to be honest, I think the other millions of users would have noticed if it was Malware by now.

Also, you tell us the "definition" of Malware, is this definition sourced from the same software which reports Steam as "Malware"?

You tell us the definition of Malware tells us Steam is Malware? I am struggling to locate such a definition.

I will reference Wikipedia as well know that it is allways right:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware

Wikipedia Definition said:
Malware, short for malicious software, is software designed to infiltrate a computer system without the owner's informed consent.

No reference of Steam in there and are you telling us Steam was installed onto your computer without your consent?

So the same software which tells you Steam is Malware allowed you to install it anyway?

WIN.

Steps to enjoy Civ V:

1. Set Steam Friends to "Offline".
2. Disable "Notifications"
3. Set Civ 5 to "Never Update Automatically"
4. Disable "Steam Community" In-Game
5. Once ran once, Set Steam to "Offline Mode"
6. STOP BEING A TOTAL IDIOT

Although, I doubt anything we say is going to change your mind.

I assume your house and head are covered in tin foil anyways.

Not having to find discs and keys is the best thing about Steam, but it's not the only solution.

Apart from promotional items the prices seem far too high.

Good god you're an idiot.

Actually, I'm just still strongly peeved off about Civ 5 having to require steam to work, and having had to cancel my Pre order.

I dont consent to having to playing any boxed retail game through Steam, so if I wanted to play Civ 5, yes I would definately consider steam to be Malware.

Wow have you got a tinfoil hat too? Seriously what 'adverts' are you talking about here? If you mean the popups to signify an updated game or a friend logging on then there is something seriously wrong with your head, if you are infact getting adverts then i think you have malware that is nothing to do with steam. And as said you can turn all steam popups off.

Oh and not to mention how can you possibly be getting popups if you're set to offline mode?

I surely would hate to be in that 0.01%.

Congratulations for ignoring the point. 0.01% is probably an overestimation, it would take far too long to guess someones password and unless this was provoked no one would bother doing so, not when you can get people to give them there details via phising, scamming or other such methods. Not to mention you can get it back quite easily by emailing steam support.
