First month on BT - Usage warning.

What I don't get is why are you asking the monkeys on the phone (not all of them, but most of them are)? They don't usually have any training or technical background, so your not going to get an accurate or even remotely intelligent response/explanation.
:S

And like Rroff says, your sync between your modem and exchange is not restricted but your actual throughput of data is when you are throttled.

Thanks Rroff. Only have net access via mobile at present so much appreciate the link.

I was trying to get a phone line 'installed' via their sales dept. Post office are a better bet on paper but appear grossly incompetant so far, so thought i should try haggling with bt. Bloody line was active a couple of weeks before i moved in, but theyve got me by the short hairs here. Hence phone monkeys :(

Have you tried blagging Sky to see if they will offer a cheaper deal? Sometimes they offer line installation and etc, helps though if you want some of the tv stuff.

We've got the Option 3 package and have only had the email about reaching 80Gb once - made sure not to do anything intensive till the end of that month!

Have since purchased a license for "Traffic Monitor" which is a very useful little usage app!

We're still on the 8mbps service when I know our line can go to about 15mbps - is it worth trying to get one of the admins on the BT forums to upgrade us or does that have to be done by phone (hate calling them!) ...

I bet they advertise their connection as unlimited, 100gb p/m is nowhere near unlimited.

I would just get on the phone and complain and ask for MAC code, don't just sit and ignore it. Once you are out of your 30 days cooldown (as you said) they might ask you for a big fee if you decide to leave them and throttle you a lot.

Get it sorted while you can.

Only problem I had with them was the router broke and they supplied me with a new one but said that the warranty from the old router would still apply, I wouldn't be given a new 12 month one.

But the highest speed I can get at mine seems to be 3Mb/s, so the download speeds are around the 180-200KB/s mark.

And at peak time I am lucky to get 2KB/s when using uTorrent.

I did get one letter about reaching 80GB once but that was a month when I watched all of DS9. :P

BT suck and Sky do have a FUP, best by far is Be*

If you are on LLU with Sky and on their Unlimited package there is NO cap, throttling, cap, restriction or anything. No 'Unlimited*' (*Fair usage policy applies). Download as much as you like. AFAIK it's the only ISP to provide a truly unlimited broadband product in the UK at this time.

Be* also have no FUP. I've just been onto Sky's website and they contradict themselves with this information, in one sentence they state they have no limit downloads, then in their terms & conditions talk about throttling at peak times if one was to "abuse" the FUP.

post office are great, apart from the slightly dodgy *when they decide to take the direct debit or not lol*
i've been with them since january almost and never had any problems, i download tonnes, play online, never get throttled, it just works
only other slight quibble i have with my connection is, it dont like online for some of my ps3 games, but will play others fine, and allows me to play every game on PC online fine, something to do with NAT type:confused: but thats it lol

They referring to the lower packages probably.

Only the top £10 pm package supports fully unlimited usage and the other free & £5 pm deal have caps.

Long gone are the days of me monitoring how much traffic I use as Sky simply don't care.

I download / stream what I want when I want to always at full speed with no throttling.

Never once in 3 years have Sky complained at my use & I am with no question a 'heavy user'.

How people put up with BT's speed cap and usage cap is beyond me when Be & Sky offer far better value for money.

Just been through BT's updated fairuse policy, they have removed reference to 100GB limit, nothing about it being 300GB now.

They jusy state they have right to reduce your speed if you are are heavy user.

Could unlimited really mean unlimited?

A BT rep on thier forums said it will be more than 100GB, the idea is for 300GB. I think back to all the times i complained, makes it all worth while now.

I just moved to BT infinity a few weeks back and as far as I'm concerned 300Gb per month is as unlimited as I will ever need.;)

Pretty sure Sky used to have a limit of about 300Gb before you'd get flagged as a heavy user.

That is for the connect product. Not the LLU Unlimited package. It is the only package in the UK that is truly unlimited. Unless you count Virgins 50mb but that has a FUP.

No actually, I thought the only people able to set up a phone line were bt and the post office. I don't have (or want) a tv license, which probably makes sky difficult. I'll look into it though, cheers

I'm glad they're treating you well. I spent three weeks trying to buy a phone line from them, and they've been ridiculously difficult. Won't put me through to the right department because it's busy, would I like a call back? Said call back doesn't happen. They've initiated no contact with me at all; chasing them to find out when they're thinking of sending an engineer, then again when he doesn't turn up is not encouraging. If they're this crap when I'm trying to give them money, I expect them to be less than worthless if there's a problem with the line.
