Looking for a quiet, cool case

Isn't everybody?

I've currently got a Lian Li v1000. It's a lovely solid ALU case but it's full of holes (literally - see the link). This makes for great ventilation but provides very little noise isolation.

I've also got far too many harddisks. 6x 1.5TB Samsung F2s and an OCZ Agility SSD. The SSD can sit anywhere but the mechanical drives need proper holding, preferably with some vibration countering and light cooling.

I've seen a few threads about the Fractal R3 (looks hot) and the SilverStone FT02R-WRI (looks even hotter) but I'm struggling to find decent availability or acoustic properties of each. Does anybody have any acoustic-related reviews for these?

What else is there out there that's worth investigating?

Fractal design's fans are almost silent. The 140mm fans are only 9Db and the 120mm fans are 15Db. You cant hear either unless you put your ear to the fan!

What about a Corsair 600T if you want the insides to look good? Don't know what the fans are like but there's two 200mm ones (I imagine low rpm therefore quiet) and a 120mm, which you could always switch for another brand if it's loud.

I, personally, would not advise going from a V1000 to an R2/3. The Lian Li's are simply higher quality, which is reflected in the price, and the shift from alloy to steel will disappoint you. The R2 is also phenomenally heavy, due to the matting on the side panels. I would hazard a guess that the two sidepanels will weigh more than your V1000.

Saying that, its cable routing potential is excellent, and it is very easy to build in. I did not find it particularly quiet though, although I did have a virtually full complement of fans, and I have seen comments about it not being particularly cool, although it was fine with my i5 /5770 setup. My V2000 was virtually silent using Noctua's, so if your setup is noisy, it might have more to do with the equipment in the box, as opposed to the box itself. The newer versions of the V series have doors on the front which apparently makes them much quiter, although I always preferred the look of the V1000/2000.

I'd suggest you look at other Lian Li's. Maybe also Corsair, Haf X and CM690.

How about the Lian Li A71F.

Fitted with a door front to reduce noise, room for 10 hdd's with anti vibration mounting.

That's a big case with some really nice (looking) finishing touches. Bit pricey but I'm not against it.

Edit: On second thought (after watching a video review), it is very big and its front filter is a nightmare to clean. It would live in quite a dusty environment. Current filter needs cleaning five or six times a year. So that kills this for me.

The other alternative is the A70F, fan fiters can be reached in 3 seconds, (yes ive timed it lol), same internally as the A71F but no door.
